Disappointing
I was really disappointed in the lidpicker product. Over the years my wife has had a difficult time finding a helmet that fits properly. You know that bright red spot that Peyton Manning has every time he takes off his helmet? My wife’s forehead gets the same bright red spot from a pressure point. It’s not a subjective discomfort, you can actually see where the helmet presses on her forehead. She’s tried a variety of lids and has yet to find one that works. So when the lidpicker service was offered, we were ecstatic!
We received the kit and faithfully followed the instructions. In fact, we took each measurement not once, or twice, but five times. We wanted to be absolutely sure the readings would be accurate. We sent them in and a few days later we got the report.
The report itself is a little confusing. It took a little bit of effort to understand, but eventually we were able to read it. Another little annoying thing about the report is that it is PDF, so the data can’t be manipulated. The report includes a lot of helmets that are out of range and should not even be considered, so it has a lot of clutter that can’t be better organized. Another little annoyance is that it includes all different kinds of helmets, open face, 3/4 , adventure, full face, modular, etc. But since we only are looking for one type, having all the others created even more clutter to sift through.
I ended up retyping all the information from the modulars onto a spreadsheet. Once all the data were in, I started sorting, at the top those helmets with multiple “Ideal” categories, then “in range”, and all the “out of range” taken out. Some of the data didn’t make sense. For example, the EXO-920GT size XS and size Large show as within range of mfg sizing chart, but when you look at the mfg chart there is zero overlap between the two. So logically, a size XS and Large should never show as within range. There were a few idiosyncracies like that which I had to weed out. With all this work I was able to whittle the list of about 300 helmets down to the 13 that should be the best fit.
In my mind, I shouldn’t have had to spend 3 hours doing this. In addition to the full 300 helmet PDF, the product should contain the lids most likely to fit.
Now, of the 13 as luck would have it, the helmet that I use was the one listed as the Ideal on two categories and In Range for the 3rd. There was no other helmet that met the conditions as well. So my wife put on my helmet and to say it doesn’t fit is an understatement. She was able to rotate it around her head freely. The next helmet listed as a potential is the one she’s currently using, which we know from experience it doesn’t fit.
So now we’re left with about 10 or so helmets. But the data was so awkward that we have to choose whether ordering a 920 GT XS or Large. According to the report, both would fit. Or the Symax III Small or Medium. Or the Klim TK 1200 Small or Mediu. And so forth. By the time we went through this exercise we knew nothing that we didn’t already know. There was no way that we could choose a helmet based on the report. In fact, there are web sites that list internal helmet shapes that seem to be far more useful. Offered for free.
For us, the lidpicker was a terrible disappointment. YMMV.
