Cost to tourists

I had a urine infection while on holiday and was told that you would not honour my insurance because it was part of my bank. I was told it would cost about €90 but ended up being €208 for just a consultation with a nurse and a doctor for a prescription for anti biopics which did not work, this totally ruined the rest of my holiday. I felt the cost was far too exessive. However I was treated well by your staff. All I can say is thank goodness for the uk health service who cured me within 2 days on my return. Trish skippings

Costs not covered but should have been

Unfortunately, we had to go to two sites because the x-ray machine was broken at the site by Foodland market . Once the x-rays were done at the Kaanapali Beach Hyatt, it was read by a Nurse Practitioner, not a doctor, thus my coverage was not applicable. In the end it came out of pocket as we needed a doctor to "read" it. Not very happy.

Covid Test

Private work covid 19 test was arranged, DOC made sure we all submitted our emails, verified it, told us our results would be available within about 24 hours. We all waited. One person of the 50+ that I spoke to got an email with a link and got his results within about a day. Everyone else didn’t receive anything. We got a general email from work days later saying that everyone was negative - but it would’ve been nice to get notice directly from DOC like they said we would receive. Coworkers called and emailed and said the responses they got were “we’re not sure” “someone from work (name given is not an employee) was supposed to advise you”. Anyway, couple stars for professionalism on site, lack of stars for follow up and results.

Sent me to the emergency room when I did not need to go

The doctor at Doctor’s on Call was very nice but he took a quick look at the cut on my arm and told me it was infected and he could not help me, that I needed to go to the emergency room, so I drove an hour to the emergency room and when the nurses and doctor saw me at the emergency room they said they couldn’t understand why the doctor didn’t just clean my cut himself and give me an antibiotic, they said he should not have sent me to the emergency room. I do not currently have insurance so this mistake of sending me to the emergency room is going to cost me a lot. It is frustrating knowing that they could have helped me at Doctors on Call for a much lower cost to me.

Has been better in the past

First I know this is Maui and it's hard to keep staff for long periods of time, but every time I go to Doc's on Call there is new receptionists, nurses, doctors and all new faces. It has lost the "Ohana" and personalized service of the past. You feel like a tourist being hustled in and out, just another number and buck. Which is sad for us long time residents who were using Doctors on Call as our family physicians and trusted them to take care of our needs from small (a flu or bad bug) to medium (stitch a wound) to large (Doctor Estin saved my husbands life by sending him to Emergency on the other side in time for them to diagnosis a serious reaction to a prescribed drug). On this visit I felt a general disinterest in my health, the nurse who took my temperature, looked at my chart and stated that I have had "Anxiety" recorded there, I looked at her with a huge question mark as I handle a stressful job and keep my level head, calm and easy going nature intact (no ulcer or high blood pressure). I told both the nurse and Doctor that I have stay healthy 90% of the year, but when I do get sick it always turns into a respiratory infection that takes weeks to shake - I cough non stop for up to a month and the antibotic's never seems to help. I asked the doctor to give me the steroid shot and pills as this is the only thing that keeps me from suffering to the point of being incapacitated and unable to breath or sleep. She agreed and I was given the shot and went to Times to pick up the antibiotics and steroid pills as we had discussed. Once I got to the counter at Times there was only one prescription for the antibiotics. I asked him to call and he did and was told she decided not to give me the Steroids. That was super embarrassing and I was really upset and felt that having discussed this she should have told me if she wasn't in agreement with doing what I requested. That being said if Carrie or David Adams had been on the staff this day I would not be writing this review. They are wonderful and know both me and my husband for the over 20 years we have been going to Doctors on Call.
