There's untapped value in making the data mean something
Hi there! I'm a long-time Sense user and devoted /r/dataisbeautiful reader. Sense has enabled me visualize patterns in the way my household uses electricity. Thank you for creating this helpful product and service. Over the years though, the Sense has turned into another smart device lurking in the background of homeownership. I don't interact with Sense daily. I might look at the monthly trend reports or use the Sense dashboard to inspect the power usage of a new device ad-hoc. I certainly don't use the dashboard as much as I did when the device was new, and I think this is because the development of data analysis and data visualization features has stalled. Sure, Sense collects data... but what are you doing with that data to enable me to make decisions? I need to correlate environmental changes (outside temperature, or inside room temperatures) to consumption changes (HVAC usage). I need to compare device and overall consumption across periods of time (month over month, season over season). Wouldn't it be cool to categorize devices in multiple ways (e.g. by room or device type) and visualize consumption by those tags/categories a la a pie chart or Sankey diagram? I understand the value of the data Sense presents is only as good as the data it collects, and these two ends of the system are inherently related. For this reason, your development dollars may be focused on improving device detection. However, device detection should only be half of what you do. I would love to see regular development and release of front-end improvements that encourage me to make meaning out of my daily use of energy. If you need to create a subscription service to fund that development, do it and make it reasonable. There's untapped value there. Thank you! -Brian
