Telephone call was answered quickly and I used chlorine bleach as suggested to kill bacteria in the sump but to no avail Whatever that black residue is it has not caused any health issue for me, but it's definitely annoying and visually unpleasant. I'm easily persuaded that the black residue clogged the shower head I replaced.
