A touch short of impressive.
Understanding that "refurbished" denotes "was previously owned" helps in overlooking minor imperfections or the lack of that shiny, brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box look and feel. That I can live with, especially when considering the price tag of a brand new Toughbook, and the device I received was really in really good shape overall.
I did quite a lot of looking around before I selected a dealer to purchase a refurbished Toughbook from and felt the Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff Inc. had a more polished, reputable and trustworthy structure and presentation. My questions were answered quickly and professionally and I felt that the overall organization of the company was a better bet than purchasing from eBay or Amazon's "Renewed" products.
That said, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed in my Toughbook. The extra installations I ordered seem in good order, however my machine came with a couple hardware and frame issues.
For one, the whole computer rocks when set on a flat surface. Wouldn't think that would be a big deal but when doing longer stints of work at a table, especially when typing, it gets pretty annoying to have the whole machine rocking forward and back. So it has me wondering if the frame itself is a bit off or if I need to grind down on the bottom pads to sort this out. Not something I really want to do on an expensive purchase.
My real and biggest disappointment is the mouse track pad. This was visibly worn right out of the postal packaging and has been a headache to use from the get go.
Using the mouse to scroll and move windows presents a constant struggle against selecting a different item or page, highlighting things accidentally and leaving whatever webpage or program I'm currently using.
Again, there are bigger issues out there, but it does present a rather annoying obstacle that makes the machine just a little less user friendly and not a pleasure to use. Bob Johnson even has a YouTube channel where he highlights the trackpad as a common issue with the CF-31; something that is prone to wear.
Considering my Toughbook was $1,800, a great deal for me to spend on a computer, I was hoping for something that would look clean, function well and last me years. I'm surprised that the trackpad wasn't addressed in the refurbishment process.
All in all, I think that BJCSI did a good job with building the package I ordered and I want to give them credit for good installations that so far function as they should. But being that the computer is difficult to navigate via mouse and trackpad, it really detracts from the upgrades and performance I think the machine is capable of and leaves me appreciative to have the computer but not impressed.
