Activist jacket for an active hiker/commuter
At nearly $1,000, it's a silky, bougie extravagance for staying warm on a warming planet.
With each outing, you feel pampered. It has pitch-perfect coloring inside and out; subdued colors in the labels; and, whoo boy, that crinkle, especially loud in freezing air. It's the first jacket I've bought labeled with a QR code, along with a 100-word manifesto, inside. The jacket's fit-and-finish and minimalist packaging rival most Apple products. It is in its element when hiking in the rain or on the commuter train. I returned it after two days.
The search for a successor to Patagonia's Wanaka Down jacket, a waterproof security blanket of down and quirk, continues. In 15 years of ownership, I've never had so many compliments about an article of clothing that I'm more fond of than some relatives -- a jacket that speaks to my inner Shaun White. Alas, they're both showing their age.
Honestly, though, it's the allure of the newer, insulated waterproof jackets causing my Apple Pay trigger to twitch. I'd probably get used to the crinkle of the Stormshadow, which sounds like paper crumpling, especially in freezing conditions, along with its longer, suit-jacket length cut compared to the Wanaka's.
The Stormshadow's sleeves are noticeably shorter, too. With the Wanaka, I need to pull back the sleeve to read my watch. Not so with the Stormshadow.
Indeed, you'll find only quibbles at this price point. There are so many details to appreciate besides its smart looks. The chest-high pockets are ample and plush. The little storage pockets inside the hand pockets hold my wallet and car key. There's a dedicated hook loop inside, under the hood. And, cheese and crackers, it feels SO good to wear.
Good on the team for making this thing a reality. I can't imagine the volume of work and years that went into it. I admire and support the company's planet-first thinking. Eventually, I'd be thrilled if you could apply the sustainable materials and responsible manufacturing know-how from Stormshadow to something more Wanaka-ish, i.e. a ~$500 dreamboat jacket.
