Cobi 3110 DUKW Amphibia
This charmingly-named model (I think an ‘N’ is missing from the end), for a long time on my ‘wish list’, is a recent release in Cobi’s 1/35 scale range and is also part of their D-Day 80th Anniversary Collection. It has just over 500 pieces in several bags which are not sub-grouped into larger, numbered, bags so it’s a bit daunting when tipped onto a tray, particularly as many elements are VERY small. However, instructions are generally clear and there are no real snags in construction, but you do need good light. The build was perfect for a cold and wet August Bank Holiday Saturday afternoon and, as is usually the case with Cobi, was challenging enough to be interesting without being frustrating. Full use is made of Cobi’s methods for putting studs on all six planes (top, bottom and four sides) of a cube.
The finished model is very solid and there are no loose or floppy connections. It looks like a DUKW and has plenty of accessories to load up the back, although I’m not sure I needed any more coils of plastic barbed wire? The pad-printed muddy markings are particularly effective. It has few working features but does roll freely and the front wheels are steerable. The little man also has excellent pad-printing and will be joined by some mates from other sets in due course, but he does need to give up smoking! All in all this is an excellent little model and is a must have for those who collect Cobi 1/35 WW2 vehicles. And no, I haven’t tested it in the bath for buoyancy.
