These shoes changed my life, and I am not being hyperbolic. I used to wear a wide New Balance but they would squish my toes give me blisters if worn for an extended period. Altra shoes don't even need to be "broken in". I adore the wide toe box. I bought the wide fit because I have a wide forefoot and small bunions. They are also deep enough for my customers orthotics. The only downside is that the heel of this shoe is too wide for me, which causes my heel to rub on the fabric and create holes. This is fairly easily solved by sticking on foam heel grips, which can be purchased at chemists for around $9. I have two pairs, one in black and another in light blue. I find them wider and more comfortable than the Escalante, and deeper than the Lone Peak (therefore better for my orthotics).

Just completed a 2 day off-track hike in a very wet & slippery Tassie and the Altra GTX hiking boots performed flawlessly! The Vibram megagrip soles saved me from so many slips & falls in icy conditions over tree roots, moss covered rocks and through deep sloppy mud. I am so impressed with Altra.
