FINALLY - What I have been looking for!
Let me give you my biased and unbiased review.
Biased version is I use to live in Norway, worked out with Truls (CEO) at crossfit, and have been a big supporter/love seeing the company grow over the years. Still bug them annually when I can get a DOUCHEBAG SURF TRAVEL BAG!
Unbaised review:
I am a big gear nerd, like HUGE. I have spent tons of hours researching travel bags and countess $ trying different ones. I have the Cotopaxi Allpa (no longer use), have tried others like Tortaga, etc. I am a very minimalist person and aim for Carry-on travel only unless I am lugging surf boards/other Gear.
PROS:
+ Stylish design/color vs. hiking backpack look -- This is where a lot of the bags fall short, they all are boring / just look like a technical plastic bag. This thing not only works great, but looks great (ALL THE COLORS!!), I get compliments all the time at the airport, work trips, weekend trips, and surf strikes etc.
+ Space optimization - having 1 huge compartment = WIN - Using a clam shell bag before (Allpa) it became often a waste of space as some compartments got in the way, or you had your packing cubes of various sizes and would have to find ways to tetris things into 1 half of a bag. This thing you have a huge compartment but the extra organization panels are smartly placed on the sides, under the panel + use the top pocket (quick stash) + bottom pocket (shoes/dirty clothes) as needed. Plenty of space for surfing through Bali / SE Asia for months (board shorts baby) or weekend getaways.
+ Layout - The way the main panel opens up is great, lays flat against your back so no one can access while you are traveling, top pocket lots of space to grab anything you need.
+ Carrying - I have only used it backpack style and it has been super comfortable lugging it around fully stuffed. However, the system is quality parts and easy to pack away the straps to deploy the handles for a duffle heaven forbid you need to check luggage.
+ Quality materials, few months of throwing it around and holds up fantastically so far with no signs of slowing down.
CONS:
- Doesn't have a laptop sleeve but that's what my briefcase or daypack bag is for.
WE HAVE A WINNER!
