High Point Scientific and My Hobby
In winter of 2023, I was preparing for the 2024 April total eclipse of sun. I’m as novice as it gets to astronomy and I labor to even to setup a tripod to put a telescope on it!
I bought a sky watcher Star adventure to use with my Nikon D850 and I watched several YouTube videos to learn how to set things up. The sky watcher tracked fine using solar filters and 700mm lens. I practice weeks before the eclipse The Sun is big target, but I had difficulty finding it using my Nikon D850 camera with the 700mm lens. I also looked at several star constellations, that is when I quickly learned that finding them with a 700mm lens is very challenging for me. I needed a Go-To- Mount, that would fix my problem. I discovered High Point Scientific with it my brand-new hobby. I was hooked line and sinker!
I bought and sky watcher star adventure GTI mount to cure my problem with locating star constellations. Then I accidentally watched a YouTube video on telescope guiding. Darn It, I had to have it.
Using my High Point Scientific account again, I bought a Skywatcher EV0-50 with flatterer and ZWO black and white camera. I tried the computer thing using a PHD2 program to do my guiding, but it was too complicated and too long for this novice to set up. Besides my tripod looked like it had spaghetti mounted on top it. At this rate the time it took me to setup my rig meant that my hobby was trouble.
YouTube video producers were impressed with ZWO ASIAIR Plus guide computer. My High Point Scientific account was used once again. WOW! That saved my hobby and I didn’t need to be a genius to use it. Setup was lot easier.
Now came the eclipse. The ZWO ASIAIR Plus and skywatcher star adventure GTI tracked the sun beautifully using my Nikon D850. I was slightly over exposed to see the prominence of the sun and I was wowed by the event. That I forgot to start the video camera mounted on the Skywatcher Star Adventure on my first mount purchase. Oh well, I will always memories of this total eclipse in my mind. This eclipse marked a milestone in my life that I will never forget.
Now what to do with all this got-to-have equipment. I still had the bug for astronomy but not with a SLR camera. It works fine, but it is clunky. I decided I must have a Redcat-71 telescope and a ZWO (black and white) camera, ZWO (EFW) Filter wheel, and ZWO (EAF) focus-er
Wait for it, you guessed it! I’m over the weight limit of the Sky watcher Star Adventure!
With my High Point Scientific account and something money can’t cure, I bought a ZWO AM5 mount.
Now, I can’t wait for clear skies at night. I find it very therapeutic. ZWO equipment is quick to setup and it just works!
This novice does not like tinkering with technology and writing code to make stuff work anymore.
The night skies are interesting and it opens this one’s mind. T Coronae Borealis show us your stuff.
High Point Scientific, thanks for supplying my hobby in novice mode. I’m sure I could have picked a shorter economical path, but my knowledge has always cost me money. It is how I learn. LOL
Sincerely
Randy Schildmeyer
