I have used a Grifiti Lap Desk for years, and it's hard to imagine using my laptop without one. It provides a grippy platform to place my laptop on, and allows for good ventilation and cooling at the same time. It is slim and compact, and easily fits into my sling pack along with my laptop, also providing protection for the screen from other contents in my sling pack.
