Oru company itself is great
Oru company itself is great and exceeds expectations!
Review of lake+ product:
I’ve only been kayaking for about three years on weekends and lunch breaks or after work. Had been eyeballing oru kayaks for years. The lake is the most economical model they have. Recommend the lake plus though if you’re going to buy one for the adjustable seat back. I have a rotomolded kayak as well. The weight of the oru lake is nice and light compared to a 45lb rotomolded kayak.
The width folded was wider than expected. Also didn’t expect a brand new kayak to have water infiltrate between the rills of the plastic was a little concerning especially after seeing the videos of how durable they are supposed to be for the cost. I took it out on a large lake (Pyramid Lake) and I haven’t paddled it enough to trust my life to it like I do to my rotomolded one. It is convenient for what it is and super light almost too light weight where it fish tails. I would like to try a larger oru kayak but need to get the several hundred dollars worth out of the one I have. My favorite part is the portability. I can take it on my boat and when parked take it out. But it’s to large even being the smallest model to store in my boats cubbies. Still appreciate they took this invention to market. Would recommend buying a larger one if you’re going on Lake Mead/Pyramid/Tahoe or large type bodies of water. If you want compact maybe do a tucktech you can get two of these more play kayaks for the price I paid for the lake+. Oru is a cool company and I appreciate them. They did give a free phone bag with the shipment which was nice too. But to get and keep up the customer base you need to maybe have an upgrade program or do more kickstarter type sales. The lake I would give a 6/10. 6 because it’s convenient but I don’t know about the longevity with the clips and don’t trust my life to it. My perception little kayak I trust my life to it has built in foam buoyancy pieces but it’s not as convenient to put on my boat during the summer. I’ve taken on waves with that and not swamped just used a sponge to dewater. If you want my confidence on the lake maybe include the safety bags.
