The Shell - after a few months
The problem with a rain jacket review from a San Diego hiker is that it doesn’t rain that much down here, but finally I had 3 big storms in Montana and 5 straight afternoons in the Sierra, both in a period of a month. Not great for the backpack but great for this review!
As expected from Hyperlite, the jacket was well made and functioned flawlessly. The hood, zipper and seams were waterproof and functioned nicely. As expected from a super thin shell it was not warm - thankfully most of the time in the west. The idea is to breathe the sweat away, while keeping the rain out. I had one hard fall on granite and I worriedly looked at the point of impact - no tear or signs of abrasion despite a good hard hit. My concern for this jacket is long term durability just because it is so light and thin not because of anything I found wearing it. I intend to give a long term review in a year, after some more rain and maybe a fall or two and some bushwhacking in the desert this winter.
