We are a civil construction company and each day our field teams need to undertake a safety checklist procedure and record the outcome, including details and signatures of all the field workers. Our old process involved a paper book that recorded the daily checklist in triplicate. The process worked OK, but inevitably the books were sometimes lost and also the entries were illegible because our big hairy construction guys are usually working in muddy conditions and the pages were always stained or creased. We replaced the whole process with a FastField App that we built internally to run on the site Managers iPhone. All the details are now captured through drop-down lists which improves accuracy and reduces time. We can still capture staff signatures with their fat fingers and the results are then immediately uploaded so that no information is lost. Initially the guys were a bit reticent to adopt the new process, but after a few days they could see that it was a better way of undertaking the mandatory process and now they love it and even suggest improvements! We use Fast Fields for all of our documentation on our vacuum excavation units in Australia. Things such as time sheets, pre start checklist, job safety analysis and employee scheduling is super easy to create and use. It honestly has made our company flow into a paperless system and I can’t imagine operating with out it. When we were looking through the endless suppliers of online forms, we were drowning in options. Fortunately we contacted a fast fields representative and he tailored the program to suite and gave us a great deal. I came across this app while exploring possibilities for the reporting of safety observations at the company locations. The demand was triggered by a response from one of our site visitors to my request to submit his report. He said "We are buried in paperwork already to create more!" I noted to myself that his problem was not in reporting his visit results but rather in submitting them in the written/typed format. The other trigger was the request from personnel of one of our sites for a more convenient way to submit observations, than through traditional observation cards, and for a more efficient method to analyze the trends of these observations. Therefore, the initiative responded to demands from different levels of the company hierarchy. The problem with the pre-printed visit forms was that the were not interactive/fillable. A visitor would have to fill them by hand or use Word processor (usually hours or days after the actual visit, when details of the visit fade away) and submit by email. There was a clear need in forms that could be: 1) Filled in during the actual visit; 2) Dictated, rather that written or typed; 3) Intuitive and user-friendly; 4) Photograph containing; 5) Easy to submit, store, retrieve and analyze; 6) Inexpensive in developing and maintaining; and 7) Readily modifiable (if needed) by the company admin personnel. Also, safety observation cards are printed in bulk, which makes it very expensive to modify them if necessary. FastField mobile forms can be easily modified should the need arise, and used on the spot. All safe and at-risk behaviors can be analyzed in the submission database. The mobile forms that were created, may be used to report not only safety, but also environmental issues on our sites, thus contributing to mitigation of negative and reinforcement of positive environmental impacts. In a similar manner, mobile forms can be used for reporting of not only safe or at-risk behavior, but also as a general mobile reporting app to record and submit examples of the company social and economic impacts around the world. If necessary, new types of the mobile forms can be added at no cost. In conclusion, FastField provides easy, intuitive and inexpensive alternative to third-party safety and at-risk behavior and hazard observation software. It has made a significant contribution to our sites' safe operation.
