FastField - Customer capture, bank account apps in remote rural Papua New Guinea
Fastfield applications are now used by a Micro Bank in the remote areas of Papua New Guinea. There are several applications used for customer capture and identification, opening bank accounts, ordering and generating debit cards, cash in and Loan Origination and Application.
The micro bank focusses on the grassroots market, where financial literacy is pretty much unknown. The bank teams visit these remote villages where there is often no power, no services, and a basic economy centred around subsistence farming / fishing and the local market. Access to financial services is difficult and generally just not available.
Bank teams visit these places for several days at a time and give financial literacy training first to the market vendors and their customers and at the end of this, customers are enrolled in the bank and accounts and cards created. This creates a financial ecosystem for that village with access to services nationally.
This is all done using the FastField apps - the customer data, ID's, mobile numbers, accounts and card required are captured on the tablets. Once submitted they are sent to the banks' data centre via FTP. This includes an XML, PDF and images file
Service programs have been developed there which pick up the received application's data and automatically create customer, account, and card records in the banks' core banking system. This then triggers automatic enrolment for the new customer to the banks real time USSD phone banking application. After this, the banks document management system automatically picks up the PDF, searches the core banking database and retrieves the customer, account, card numbers etc and creates the indices for document searches.
Upon completion of this, an automatic SMS is generated and sent advising the customer their new account number, confirm the ordering of the debit card, and asking them to access the banks USSD mobile banking application.
In all from form submission to completion where the customer receives the SMS, takes 2 to 3 minutes depending on the network conditions. The customer can then perform a cash in transaction via the bank officer once again using the cash in fastfield application. This is submitted and funds credited to the customers account in close to real time.
The customer then has access to those funds for transfers to other customers, cash out via agents, phone topups, etc . Within two weeks, their debit card is delivered which opens up access nationwide to ATM and merchant and branch Pos networks run on a 3rd party banks network which interfaces to the micro banks core banking system.
The impact of this initiative is really starting to be felt. Staff no longer have to receive paper forms and enter manually to create records, thereby being freed up and joining the field teams to expand the business further.
The Fastfield applications developed and new ones to come online shortly are now an important part for driving the expansion of the banks' activities into areas of the country that were previously nearly impossible.
Finally, the technical support I have received from FastField has been excellent and the ongoing development and release of enhancements to the system continue to add more and more value.
