The Easter story wheel is

The Easter story wheel is a great idea. It was simple to prepare for, while giving the children an opportunity to receive the true meaning of Easter while coloring the photos.

Help me generate sermon number

Help me generate sermon number 2 for the series Easter Changes Everything. This sermon is based on the encounter that Jesus has with two individuals on the Emmaus Road. The title of this sermon is Easter Changes Everything: Confusion to Revelation. I would like the focus to be that what changes because of Easter is that we go from confusion to revelation. Here is a sermon that could help base this message from: And it is a journey. Sometimes on the journey you become so familiar with things you don't notice them. They can just be right there. I grew up 30 miles from Charleston, South Carolina. I love going to Charleston with Holly. When we want to get away for a weekend, typically we will sneak away to Charleston. By the way, if it's a vacation, that means there are no kids. If the kids are there it's a family trip. Vacation is Holly, me, a hotel, and some shopping. Maybe some carbohydrates too. We go to Charleston a little bit. It's only three and a half hours from Charlotte. The first time we went she said, "What was it like growing up so close to such a historic and beautiful place?" I said, "I never thought about it. " When I was a kid, it wasn't a thing. It was Charleston. We never really made it past North Charleston. That's where the mall was. I never really even made it downtown. The place that I pay now to go and spend the night I never even drove to. It was almost too close to notice until I got away from it. Even the other day, I was eating with the family. We go out to eat most Fridays, and we were eating at this burger joint, as the young people say. Isn't that what the young people call it? The burger joint, over at the five-and-dime. I'm going to get to my Scripture in a minute. It's Luke 24:13-35. Don't worry; I'm going there in a minute. You can meet me there. Lace up your shoes. Stretch your hamstrings. Do whatever you have to do, because we're going on a journey. We went to this restaurant, and the young lady who was serving us was really nice, but she kept looking at me funny. Every time she came over she was looking at me funny. 2:23 2 minutes, 23 seconds She came up and said, "I just figured out who you are. You're the Facebook guy. " I said, "Am I?" 2:32 2 minutes, 32 seconds She said, "Me and my friends send the clips of your Facebook preaching to each other, my friends in California. " 2:39 2 minutes, 39 seconds I said, "Cool. That's great. " 2:43 2 minutes, 43 seconds She brought Holly her fries and came back another time, and she said, "They just told me in the back that your church is here in Charlotte. " 2:52 2 minutes, 52 seconds I said, "Well, yeah. It's two miles from here, this restaurant, where I preach from. 3:01 3 minutes, 1 second We have churches in other places, not just in Charlotte, but it's based in Charlotte. We could probably throw a french fry at it and hit it. " 3:08 3 minutes, 8 seconds She said, "I didn't even know it. " She's two miles from the church. 3:15 3 minutes, 15 seconds Y'all need to invite people more is what I'm saying. You are not doing your job is what that said to me. 3:24 3 minutes, 24 seconds What it really reminded me… I told her, "You can get it on Facebook, and there are little clips, but if you really 3:30 3 minutes, 30 seconds want to see what makes us special you have to get in the parking lot, see the people there, get a hug from a greeter. 3:38 3 minutes, 38 seconds Do you have kids? You need to drop your kids off at eKidz and watch how we teach them. You really need to get around the people. 3:46 3 minutes, 46 seconds This is your lucky day, because you're going to be my special guest. " I gave her an invitation, and she still didn't come, but that's not the point of the illustration. 3:55 3 minutes, 55 seconds The point of the illustration is you can be so close… Elijah, my oldest son, the other day… I went to hand him my phone. He said, "Daddy, what's that on your wrist?" 4:03 4 minutes, 3 seconds I said, "On my wrist? What's on my wrist?" He was talking about my scar. I've had this scar since I was 4. 4:12 4 minutes, 12 seconds This scar, my mom tells me, is from a childhood incident. 4:18 4 minutes, 18 seconds She says I was playing with a dog bowl, and it was made of glass. I dropped the dog bowl. The dog bowl cut my wrist. 4:27 4 minutes, 27 seconds She said she thought I was going to die. I don't remember any of this. 4:31 4 minutes, 31 seconds It's not traumatic for me, but I've always had this little Harry Potter thing right there on my wrist. 4:41 4 minutes, 41 seconds Elijah never noticed it. That's crazy. 4:44 4 minutes, 44 seconds These are the first hands that held his ungrateful butt and wiped his ungrateful…and he never even noticed. 4:56 4 minutes, 56 seconds How many times have I changed his diaper with these hands? Probably not many. 5:04 5 minutes, 4 seconds Single digit, probably. 5:07 5 minutes, 7 seconds My point is it can be so close and remain unnoticed, so imminent and invisible…to us, but that doesn't mean it's not there. 5:23 5 minutes, 23 seconds Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. Let's go on the road. 5:31 5 minutes, 31 seconds Seven miles. Are you ready? I probably shouldn't have worn my white sneakers today. 5:38 5 minutes, 38 seconds They're going to get dirty, because we're going on this Emmaus Road. Jesus only has 40 days. 5:45 5 minutes, 45 seconds He has risen from the dead. He is resurrected, just like he said he would be. 5:54 5 minutes, 54 seconds He has the keys to death, hell, and the grave. He gave the Devil a big black eye when that stone rolled away. 6:02 6 minutes, 2 seconds Now all of hell is trembling, because the temple they thought they had destroyed has rebuilt himself just like he said he would. 6:15 6 minutes, 15 seconds He is risen! The women went to the tomb, and it's Sunday morning. 6:21 6 minutes, 21 seconds They brought some spices, but they would not need them, because the angel said to the women, "Why do you look for the living amongst the dead?" 6:30 6 minutes, 30 seconds I want to talk in this first installment of Seven-Mile Miracle on the subject Reverse the Search. 6:38 6 minutes, 38 seconds Maybe we are missing the presence and the power of God, the resurrection power of God, 6:46 6 minutes, 46 seconds the redemptive power of God, the restoration power of God, the redeeming power of God, 6:53 6 minutes, 53 seconds because we're searching in the wrong places. They were looking for the living among the dead. 7:01 7 minutes, 1 second "He is not here; he has risen. " 7:04 7 minutes, 4 seconds Why are you looking for a living God in a dead place, a dead relationship, a dead text thread, a dead Facebook page? 7:19 7 minutes, 19 seconds Why are you looking for the living God in dead religion, dormant religion? Why are you looking for the living…? 7:27 7 minutes, 27 seconds Reverse the search. He is alive and he is real. 7:31 7 minutes, 31 seconds The presence of God is not meant to be an add-on or an accessory but the operating system 7:37 7 minutes, 37 seconds of the life of anyone who will choose to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. 7:46 7 minutes, 46 seconds God has raised him from the dead, and he has risen from the dead, and he has to go get the message out, get on the road, because he only has 40 days. 7:54 7 minutes, 54 seconds He's about to be taken up to heaven and seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. 8:00 8 minutes He has to go and show the world that he's living so they'll believe the proof of the power of his resurrection. He has to go. 8:07 8 minutes, 7 seconds What shall he do first if he wants to reveal himself to the world and let them know that the proof is that he is the Son of God and the fact that death could not hold him and 8:14 8 minutes, 14 seconds the grave could not keep him and the tomb was borrowed because it wasn't needed for very long? Where does he go? What does he do? 8:20 8 minutes, 20 seconds Perhaps we should host a resurrection reenactment event. Maybe he can get Barclays. Maybe he can call Jay. 8:28 8 minutes, 28 seconds Maybe he can do it in a cultural center. Maybe he ought to call Zuck. Maybe he ought to put this on social. Maybe he ought to get it out. Maybe it can go viral. 8:37 8 minutes, 37 seconds Maybe he ought to make a meme. What does Jesus do on the day he defeats death? 8:44 8 minutes, 44 seconds You might be surprised. What he does next is take a walk. 8:53 8 minutes, 53 seconds Come on, let's walk. Will you walk with me? I don't even care if you know where Luke is in the Bible. 9:00 9 minutes I just want you to walk with me to this passage of Scripture where we join two travelers who as of yet remain nameless. 9:12 9 minutes, 12 seconds Jesus on the day of his resurrection, with only 40 days to spare to tell the world that he is God and convince them with many signs and proofs, appears to two travelers whose names we have never seen. 9:25 9 minutes, 25 seconds I mean, at least go get Bartholomew. I've heard of him. 9:31 9 minutes, 31 seconds But these two travelers were, just like you and me, walking along, and they were headed toward a village called Emmaus. 9:41 9 minutes, 41 seconds I've been there. Five years ago, we did an Easter presentation for our church by the name Seven-Mile Miracle, 9:50 9 minutes, 50 seconds and we decided it would be cool if we shot it there, but when we got there… How many of you would love to go to Israel one day, if you could, and see where Jesus walked? 10:00 10 minutes How many of you are fine just to watch it on National Geographic and you don't need all that in your life? Thank you for your honesty. 10:05 10 minutes, 5 seconds If you go, they'll tell you when you get there… They'll say, "Hey, this is Emmaus. " Then if you have a really honest guide they'll say, "It's maybe Emmaus. " 10:15 10 minutes, 15 seconds We don't know exactly where Emmaus was. 10:17 10 minutes, 17 seconds It was such an insignificant place in its day that there is no archaeological evidence that this was definitely the place. 10:29 10 minutes, 29 seconds Why would Jesus go to a place that wasn't even significant enough in its day to be known in modernity or pinpointed on a map? 10:42 10 minutes, 42 seconds We look for God in places that everyone recognizes. We think Jesus needs a shout-out from Kim or Kanye. 10:52 10 minutes, 52 seconds We act like Jesus needs an Oscar for "Best Resurrection. " 11:01 11 minutes, 1 second Instead, he goes on this dirty road. It's a little road, a really tiny road, the one they say he might have walked. 11:09 11 minutes, 9 seconds I walked it. He meets up with two people, and it's not Zuck, and it's not Trump. 11:21 11 minutes, 21 seconds They're walking toward Emmaus. Jesus died in Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the place where the Passover feast had just been celebrated. 11:31 11 minutes, 31 seconds Jerusalem was the place where the promised Holy Spirit was to come. 11:36 11 minutes, 36 seconds Jesus leaves the place where the Spirit is coming to follow two people, and we don't even know who they are. 11:43 11 minutes, 43 seconds What kind of God is this who would speak to you in a crowd of thousands and would bring 11:52 11 minutes, 52 seconds you to this place at this moment? 11:57 11 minutes, 57 seconds These men are walking along on the same day that Jesus got up from the grave. Picture it now. Two things are happening at once. 12:06 12 minutes, 6 seconds The eternal Word of God, who was in the beginning with God, the fullness of his glory, full of grace and truth, has trampled death, sin, hell, and the grave, made a mockery of Satan, 12:15 12 minutes, 15 seconds and those who handed him over are soon to bow down and worship him, and every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father, and God has exalted Jesus to the highest place and given him the name that is above every name. 12:24 12 minutes, 24 seconds That's happening, and these two unnamed people… Most scholars say probably a husband and wife. 12:33 12 minutes, 33 seconds In a minute we get the guy's name. 12:35 12 minutes, 35 seconds We don't get the woman's name, because in Bible times people didn't treat women too well. They were pretty overlooked. 12:41 12 minutes, 41 seconds That's the kind of people Jesus liked: the people who were overlooked. He would work a miracle with a little kid's lunch. 12:48 12 minutes, 48 seconds In their math kids didn't count, but in Jesus' math, that's where the multiplication was: in the hands of the one everybody else walked past. 12:55 12 minutes, 55 seconds I'm just saying that, because you might think you can only go on this journey if you're perfect. 13:00 13 minutes You might think you can only go on this journey if your life is profound, that God can only use you if everybody knows you, because we worship the idol of fame in this age. 13:14 13 minutes, 14 seconds But the famous one, the name above every name, meets with two previously unnamed travelers, 13:23 13 minutes, 23 seconds and only because he met with them do we know that the name of the man was Cleopas. 13:29 13 minutes, 29 seconds Jesus Christ and Cleo. That's what his friends call him. 13:35 13 minutes, 35 seconds Since we're going on this walk with him, we should call him by his nickname Cleo. 13:43 13 minutes, 43 seconds They're walking to a village called Emmaus, a village that nobody even knows where it really is today. I mean, they can guess. 13:52 13 minutes, 52 seconds They're going toward Emmaus. 13:55 13 minutes, 55 seconds Why would Jesus make one of his first resurrection appearances headed away from where the Holy 14:03 14 minutes, 3 seconds Spirit was about to fall toward a place no one would even remember? 14:09 14 minutes, 9 seconds Could it be possible that we look for God in the destination but he is the God of the 14:19 14 minutes, 19 seconds detour? He is the God of the detour. 14:28 14 minutes, 28 seconds I'm trying to tell you that the perfect, flawless Son of God turned his back on Jerusalem, set 14:37 14 minutes, 37 seconds out on a road toward an unknown place, followed two people we've never met before, because 14:43 14 minutes, 43 seconds he is not the God of arrival; he is the God of the first step and the second step and every step. He's with me when I'm right. 14:51 14 minutes, 51 seconds He's with me when I'm wrong. He's with me when I'm going forward. He's with me when I'm stuck. He's with me when I'm high-stepping. He's with me when I'm crawling. He's with me when I'm strong. He's with me when I'm weak. He walks with me. 14:59 14 minutes, 59 seconds He talks with me. 15:12 15 minutes, 12 seconds Remember, they're walking the wrong way. 15:18 15 minutes, 18 seconds If they really believed he was going to raise from the dead, they would have stayed in Jerusalem, but they didn't. 15:24 15 minutes, 24 seconds God followed them to the wrong place, because grace will chase you down. 15:30 15 minutes, 30 seconds Something special is going to happen in this church today, something special, something 15:39 15 minutes, 39 seconds significant, but it might start really small. 15:45 15 minutes, 45 seconds We look for God in the dramatic, but he hides in the details. Sit down. 15:52 15 minutes, 52 seconds Let's go for a walk. This is just a setup week. It's going to be amazing. It's going to be seven last sayings of Jesus Christ before he died, last words. 16:02 16 minutes, 2 seconds We're going to study them and apply them to your life. This is going to be amazing. It really is. We're going to do a devotional on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, everything. 16:13 16 minutes, 13 seconds Myspace… I'll send a pigeon to your house with a devotion. Do you see what I'm saying? 16:17 16 minutes, 17 seconds We'll do whatever we have to do as digital discipleship so we can see Jesus in 3D. 16:25 16 minutes, 25 seconds The first D is not destination; it's detour, because God will meet you on the detour, the parts of your journey you didn't ask for, plan for, or pack for. 16:40 16 minutes, 40 seconds "Feed these people. " "We didn't bring lunch. You didn't tell us to. " 16:47 16 minutes, 47 seconds Jesus said one time, "I need to go through Samaria," and they were like, "Um, that's not the most direct route. " 16:55 16 minutes, 55 seconds Jesus is (I don't mean this in an insulting way, but I think you'll agree) inefficient by human standards. 17:07 17 minutes, 7 seconds It says in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. " 17:12 17 minutes, 12 seconds When you try to search for God with your understanding and you say, "I'll start my journey when I understand," you will never leave Ur of the Chaldeans, Abraham. 17:26 17 minutes, 26 seconds It grows as you go, with every step. 17:32 17 minutes, 32 seconds So he walks up to them on the detour in the wrong direction toward a destination that has disappeared from our modern maps, because it wasn't what happened when they got there; 17:45 17 minutes, 45 seconds it was what he revealed along the way. What if Christianity is a journey, not a destination? 17:55 17 minutes, 55 seconds What if salvation was a starting block, not a finish line? What if God is not done with you? 18:02 18 minutes, 2 seconds What if you don't have to find out to step out? What if you don't have to know the reason to stay on the road? That's all these two were doing: walking. 18:11 18 minutes, 11 seconds They didn't invite Jesus. They didn't pray to Jesus. They didn't go to church. They didn't sing a hymn. They didn't pray a prayer. 18:19 18 minutes, 19 seconds They didn't memorize a verse. They didn't even join an eGroup. (You should, but they didn't. ) 18:27 18 minutes, 27 seconds All they did was walk, and as they're walking along the road to a village called Emmaus… 18:33 18 minutes, 33 seconds As I'm walking through my life, as I'm raising my kids, as I'm dropping them off, as I'm 18:40 18 minutes, 40 seconds smacking them as we go… Toward Emmaus, a seven-mile journey. 18:48 18 minutes, 48 seconds I'm glad they put that detail, because that lets me know that he who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it. 18:56 18 minutes, 56 seconds Seven in the Bible is the number of completion. God created the world in six days. On the seventh day he rested. He didn't rest because he was tired; he rested because he was done. 19:05 19 minutes, 5 seconds You like that? I love y'all so much. I love sharing the Word of God with you. 19:14 19 minutes, 14 seconds The Word of God is alive and active. It'll make you holler. It'll make you scream. 19:19 19 minutes, 19 seconds When the Word of God is alive to you, when Jesus shows up on the road and meets you in 19:24 19 minutes, 24 seconds your sin and snatches you from your shame, it'll make you holler. 19:39 19 minutes, 39 seconds You just jump up. 19:40 19 minutes, 40 seconds They're going along the road… Touch somebody and say, "I'm going somewhere. " I don't have to know the destination, because every detour, he will direct my paths. 19:48 19 minutes, 48 seconds That's what Proverbs 3:5-6 says. He will direct my paths. That means the straight ones and the crooked ones. He'll bend them all together. 19:57 19 minutes, 57 seconds That's what grace is. Seven is the number of completion. Seven times around the walls of Jericho, and they fell. Did you go to Bible school? 20:04 20 minutes, 4 seconds Do you remember this? Seven miles they're walking, Cleo and Mrs. Cleo. 20:16 20 minutes, 16 seconds They're talking with each other about everything that had happened, how they hung the one they 20:24 20 minutes, 24 seconds had hoped to be the Redeemer on a tree, and how the Romans had crucified the one who was supposed to deliver them from their oppression. 20:37 20 minutes, 37 seconds Look at verse 15. 20:44 20 minutes, 44 seconds "As they talked and discussed these things [these events]…" 20:50 20 minutes, 50 seconds The divorce, the job loss, the struggle, the wasted relationship you didn't know how to handle. 21:06 21 minutes, 6 seconds As they talked about the death of what they had set their expectation on, right there in the middle of it, Jesus himself came up. 21:18 21 minutes, 18 seconds He didn't politely ask to join them on their journey. He walked along with them. 21:27 21 minutes, 27 seconds Have you ever felt like God wouldn't leave you alone even if you wanted him to? Like, you tried to disable your conscience, and you still felt bad smoking it. 21:37 21 minutes, 37 seconds Come on, talk to me. Don't look at me like you came in church riding in on a chariot, polishing a halo. I will come at you. 21:44 21 minutes, 44 seconds I'll walk right up to you. That's what he did. He walked right up to them. "…but they were kept from recognizing him. " 21:53 21 minutes, 53 seconds Have you been kept from recognizing resurrection right in front of you? 22:00 22 minutes We look for God in the dramatic, but he shows up in the details. 22:08 22 minutes, 8 seconds He takes a walk. "Jesus, you do not have time for this. " Let me be his press agent for a little while. "We have 40 days. 22:17 22 minutes, 17 seconds We have to meet with people, make things happen. We have to get this show on the road. " He says, "Yeah, on the road with Cleo. 22:25 22 minutes, 25 seconds I have to meet with Cleo. I have to show myself to Cleo. " 22:33 22 minutes, 33 seconds But he was kept from recognizing. It doesn't say that he didn't recognize him. Something kept him from recognizing. 22:41 22 minutes, 41 seconds Resurrection begins in your life when you ask the question, "What is keeping me from recognizing the presence of God that is right there, not only beside me but within me?" 22:54 22 minutes, 54 seconds Can I teach about this a little bit? This is an opening week. It'll get better as it goes, but you have to start somewhere. 23:02 23 minutes, 2 seconds The journey has to start somewhere. Every journey that is successful begins with the end in mind. 23:09 23 minutes, 9 seconds I know it seems kind of backwards that I want to teach you a series on what Jesus said before he died and I'm starting with a spoiler alert that he's already resurrected and on the road, 23:20 23 minutes, 20 seconds but when you begin with the end in mind you see that no matter what I go through in life, 23:27 23 minutes, 27 seconds the result is that God will use whatever I go through to reveal his glory. 23:32 23 minutes, 32 seconds "I am convinced that the sufferings of this present time are not even worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed in me. " 23:42 23 minutes, 42 seconds If I stay on the road. I don't understand all the reasons, but I'm on the road. 23:50 23 minutes, 50 seconds They were kept from recognizing him. How many times have I been kept from recognizing what God was doing right in front of me? 24:00 24 minutes How many times have I been kept from recognizing ordinary moments of joy because I was waiting on things to be perfect? 24:09 24 minutes, 9 seconds How many times have I missed a miracle because all I saw was the mess? 24:13 24 minutes, 13 seconds How many times have I missed the opportunity to give something because I was so centered on myself, how I feel, what I need, what I didn't get? 24:23 24 minutes, 23 seconds God said, "If you'll change the question and reverse the search… Maybe it's not about what is happening to you; maybe it's what I want to do through you. " 24:34 24 minutes, 34 seconds They hung him high. He didn't come down, because he had something to do. 24:42 24 minutes, 42 seconds They didn't recognize it. "I didn't recognize it. 24:47 24 minutes, 47 seconds I didn't recognize that my kids were growing up fast, so I didn't make the time. 24:52 24 minutes, 52 seconds I didn't recognize the good things about the person I said I'd spend the rest of my life with, so I started focusing on the things about them that were mildly annoying, and 25:02 25 minutes, 2 seconds eventually it became an insurmountable resentment. I didn't recognize. " 25:10 25 minutes, 10 seconds "I didn't recognize that the people I was hanging out with were doing some things that were going to stick with me for the rest of my life, and it became an addiction even though it just started out as an attraction. 25:16 25 minutes, 16 seconds I didn't recognize. " 25:23 25 minutes, 23 seconds What kept them from recognizing? You can be kept from recognizing the patterns that created your outcomes. 25:30 25 minutes, 30 seconds You can be kept from recognizing the behaviors that are leading you to the destinations you hate. 25:36 25 minutes, 36 seconds You know you hate where you are, but you don't know how you got there. 25:43 25 minutes, 43 seconds They were kept from recognizing him. He was right there with them. It's like that dude who prayed God would save him. 25:52 25 minutes, 52 seconds You know the story. A helicopter came. He didn't take the helicopter. A boat came. He wouldn't get in the boat. 25:58 25 minutes, 58 seconds He drowned and died, and he said, "God, I asked you to save me," and God said, "That helicopter was me. 26:06 26 minutes, 6 seconds That boat was me. " "That rejection was me. 26:11 26 minutes, 11 seconds Even that pain… I let it happen, because I wanted to produce a power in your life, and the only way I could get it through and open your eyes…" 26:25 26 minutes, 25 seconds They're walking, and here comes Jesus, like a stalker. It's kind of weird, right? 26:33 26 minutes, 33 seconds He just shows up in the middle of them, Cleo and Mrs. Cleo, and asks them a question. 26:40 26 minutes, 40 seconds Just sit right down beside them in church, walk up on the road. I love Jesus. This is comical to me. 26:46 26 minutes, 46 seconds If you think the Bible is boring, I want to challenge the fact that maybe it's you that is boring. Watch this. 26:54 26 minutes, 54 seconds This is some funny stuff. 26:55 26 minutes, 55 seconds The author of life who knows all things, who lays bare the intents of every heart, who created Cleo and Mrs. Cleo before the foundations of the earth for an express purpose, by whom 27:04 27 minutes, 4 seconds and through whom and for whom all things are created… That Jesus, the Word made flesh, full of grace and truth, walks up to Cleo and says, "What y'all talking about?" 27:17 27 minutes, 17 seconds Like he doesn't know. "They stood still, their faces downcast. " 27:24 27 minutes, 24 seconds Everything in this text seems backwards to me. He's going toward Emmaus, away from Jerusalem. That doesn't make sense. He's talking to people who don't seem important. 27:32 27 minutes, 32 seconds That doesn't make sense. He just got up from the dead. If you just got up from the dead, would you want to hang around happy people? 27:40 27 minutes, 40 seconds I would want to find somebody who could celebrate. 27:45 27 minutes, 45 seconds We're going to pop something. 27:52 27 minutes, 52 seconds Cleo is sad, because it didn't go the way he thought. It didn't end up the way he thought. Their faces were downcast. All of a sudden, they stop walking. 28:00 28 minutes The Bible says, "They stood still, their faces downcast. " They stop, and apparently Jesus stops with them. 28:10 28 minutes, 10 seconds They're sad, and apparently he enters into their sadness. 28:16 28 minutes, 16 seconds They start explaining to the one who created life how life was supposed to turn out. 28:23 28 minutes, 23 seconds I love the Bible. I'm fascinated by this journey. 28:30 28 minutes, 30 seconds If you read the Bible like a magic rulebook, you will never fully understand the extent to which it is meant to speak to your situation and guide your life. 28:39 28 minutes, 39 seconds If you really get into this thing with me over the next seven weeks, I'm going to show you how God is not scared to walk right up in the details of your situation. 28:48 28 minutes, 48 seconds A bird falls out of the sky, and he counts it and puts it on the ledger, and you think he doesn't know about your loneliness, your tears, your heartbreak? 28:57 28 minutes, 57 seconds Do you think he's intimidated by your skepticism? Do you think your broken heart can chase him away? The Bible says, "A broken and a contrite heart he will not despise. " 29:07 29 minutes, 7 seconds The only heart he can't get into is the one that is closed up through pride, but if you 29:11 29 minutes, 11 seconds open yourself, even with your face downcast… Cleo said, "Hey, man, are you…?" 29:23 29 minutes, 23 seconds This is ironic. The host of heaven has come to earth. 29:26 29 minutes, 26 seconds He died and rose again, lived a perfect life, and Cleo says, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem…?" 29:37 29 minutes, 37 seconds Remember, he made it. 29:42 29 minutes, 42 seconds They're treating the God of the world like a guest. 29:48 29 minutes, 48 seconds This is so funny to me, how we get it twisted, how we get it out of order. 29:54 29 minutes, 54 seconds We start thinking God needs to consult our blueprint of how our lives need to be built. I can get this way as a pastor, telling God what he needs to do in my church. 30:04 30 minutes, 4 seconds You get this way as a parent, what God needs to do with your children. 30:07 30 minutes, 7 seconds Cleopas launches out on this long, long speech, telling Jesus what happened to Jesus. 30:20 30 minutes, 20 seconds God has a sense of humor, because he lets him talk. Cleopas gives him his speech, and Jesus lets him finish. 30:30 30 minutes, 30 seconds "Are you the only one who doesn't know what happened?" 30:36 30 minutes, 36 seconds The one it happened to is standing there, and Cleo wants to tell him what happened. 30:42 30 minutes, 42 seconds "What had happened was Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. " 30:50 30 minutes, 50 seconds They are standing before the great I Am, and they start with "He was. " 30:54 30 minutes, 54 seconds There he is, and they're stuck in "He was. " 31:02 31 minutes, 2 seconds Are you missing what is because you're stuck in what was? 31:12 31 minutes, 12 seconds "We hoped he was the one, but it took a turn for the worse. 31:16 31 minutes, 16 seconds The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him…" Jesus is nodding. 31:24 31 minutes, 24 seconds "Tell me all about it. " Verse 21: "…but we had hoped…" 31:28 31 minutes, 28 seconds Had I been Jesus, I would have stopped you right there, because hope that is seen is not hope at all. 31:37 31 minutes, 37 seconds If you had hoped and don't hope anymore, what you had wasn't real hope, because real hope 31:46 31 minutes, 46 seconds can hold on, even on Friday. 31:55 31 minutes, 55 seconds "I had hoped it would be over by now. I had hoped the medicine would fix it. 32:03 32 minutes, 3 seconds I had hoped they'd say yes. I had hoped they had asked. I had hoped. " 32:09 32 minutes, 9 seconds Hope is standing in front of hopelessness. Christ and Cleo. 32:14 32 minutes, 14 seconds The cross clashed with Cleo's expectation, and now his experience has left him downcast. 32:22 32 minutes, 22 seconds "We had hoped that he was the one. " "I thought I would be further along by now. 32:32 32 minutes, 32 seconds I thought I'd be married by 26. 32:37 32 minutes, 37 seconds I hoped they would be good to me, pay me back, and appreciate me after all I did for them. 32:51 32 minutes, 51 seconds I had hoped he was going to redeem me. I had hoped he was going to heal me. " 33:00 33 minutes Could it be that we miss God because we look for him in the dreams but he is found in the disappointment? 33:11 33 minutes, 11 seconds Their faces were downcast. Their hopes were dashed. 33:18 33 minutes, 18 seconds From their standpoint, the story was over. 33:23 33 minutes, 23 seconds Since I'm your tour guide on this seven-mile journey, let me give you a professional travel tip. Don't judge the journey before it's over. 33:32 33 minutes, 32 seconds I don't know who that was even for. 33:38 33 minutes, 38 seconds Don't judge the journey of seven miles when you haven't even been two yet. 33:46 33 minutes, 46 seconds See what the end will be. If you trust his promise, you have to trust the path. 33:56 33 minutes, 56 seconds It might be winding, and it might lead to a cross, and it might not feel good, and it might be confusing, but he is the God of the detour. 34:07 34 minutes, 7 seconds It might not be spectacular, and he might not prove himself to you with signs you can see or sense or feel, and there might not be a goose bump that proves his presence. 34:18 34 minutes, 18 seconds He might show up in the details, the little things. It might be in the little ways. 34:25 34 minutes, 25 seconds He's right there on the road. He's walking with them. They almost can't recognize him because what's happening is so common. 34:33 34 minutes, 33 seconds He looks like just another guy. They are standing next to resurrection. 34:39 34 minutes, 39 seconds They don't recognize it, and it's right there. 34:48 34 minutes, 48 seconds He's right there. He is here now. 34:53 34 minutes, 53 seconds He is, he was, he is to come, and he's with you in this moment. 35:06 35 minutes, 6 seconds "We had hoped he was the one. What is more," Cleo says. "To make matters worse…" 35:14 35 minutes, 14 seconds Look at verse 21. "…it's the third day. " Y'all don't know that's funny. I'm sorry. 35:21 35 minutes, 21 seconds I'm just a nerdy little pastor. I get kicks out of weird stuff. It's the third day. 35:27 35 minutes, 27 seconds The whole time he was on the earth he said, "This is going to go badly on Friday, but come Sunday, don't look for me in the tomb they buried me in. 35:41 35 minutes, 41 seconds I'm getting up out of here. " 35:47 35 minutes, 47 seconds What they thought was the dead end was really just the beginning. Do you want to see him in 3D? 35:56 35 minutes, 56 seconds Look for him in the detours. 35:59 35 minutes, 59 seconds Do you want to see him in 3D, not this flat little coloring-book Jesus with a lamb on 36:06 36 minutes, 6 seconds his lap, but the living, risen Son of God, under whose feet all things have been placed and who is now seated at the right hand of God? 36:17 36 minutes, 17 seconds Do you want to see him like that? 36:19 36 minutes, 19 seconds Don't look for him in just the dramatic; look for him in the details, that little thing God has been doing in your life. 36:31 36 minutes, 31 seconds Do you want to see the Son of God? Do you want to see Jesus? How many of you want to see him? How many of you want to see God active in your life? 36:38 36 minutes, 38 seconds I mean, with the eyes of your heart, to know him. 36:46 36 minutes, 46 seconds He can be found at the dead ends, when you used to hope and now it's hard to hope. 36:54 36 minutes, 54 seconds That's where he meets you on your Emmaus Road. 37:00 37 minutes I'm glad they can't find Emmaus, because that means we each get to have our own. 37:15 37 minutes, 15 seconds That means I get to have my own Emmaus. I'm on my own journey. 37:21 37 minutes, 21 seconds I'm on my own path, and I'm not alone. I don't even like walking very much. 37:28 37 minutes, 28 seconds I don't have a Fitbit. Everything about this seems backwards, doesn't it? 37:36 37 minutes, 36 seconds He spent his whole life telling people, "Follow me," and now he's following them. 37:41 37 minutes, 41 seconds He has come down out of heaven, and instead of people making their way to God, now God has come to us. 37:51 37 minutes, 51 seconds He has reversed the search. You weren't even looking for him, and he was looking for you. 37:54 37 minutes, 54 seconds You weren't even seeking for him, and he was showing himself all along. 38:05 38 minutes, 5 seconds Cleopas said, "We had hoped he was the one. In addition, some of our women amazed us. 38:12 38 minutes, 12 seconds They went to the tomb early this morning…" Wrong place. He's not in the tomb; he's on the road. 38:21 38 minutes, 21 seconds He's not in religion; he's in relationship. Please help me preach this. 38:29 38 minutes, 29 seconds I need to know you're receiving it, because God told me some of you are going to come out of tombs of tradition and really experience the presence of God. 38:43 38 minutes, 43 seconds How many want to experience his presence? 38:52 38 minutes, 52 seconds You'll find it on the road. "Our women went to the tomb but didn't find his body. 39:02 39 minutes, 2 seconds They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb…" 39:11 39 minutes, 11 seconds This is still Cleo talking, telling Jesus about Jesus, still not recognizing what's right beside him. 39:22 39 minutes, 22 seconds "Some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but…" This is the most ironic verse in all of Scripture. 39:29 39 minutes, 29 seconds "…they did not see Jesus. " 39:33 39 minutes, 33 seconds He is telling Jesus about other people who didn't see Jesus, and he doesn't know it's Jesus. 39:43 39 minutes, 43 seconds Have you ever realized how easy it is to judge somebody else's journey and not even recognize 39:50 39 minutes, 50 seconds what God is doing in your own? 40:00 40 minutes Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are, and slow to believe…" That's the problem. 40:07 40 minutes, 7 seconds Look at me. Every location, watching on television, watching online, I want you to look at me. If you can't look at me, look at the screen. Look at me. 40:16 40 minutes, 16 seconds It starts in the heart. He said, "You're slow to believe. " 40:22 40 minutes, 22 seconds You keep trying to make sense of things in your life with your head. 40:27 40 minutes, 27 seconds You keep trying to figure out the reason for what's happening to you, and when you can't figure out the reason, you want to jump off the road. 40:36 40 minutes, 36 seconds You want to stop following. 40:37 40 minutes, 37 seconds You want to stop trusting when you can't figure it out, but if you would reverse the search 40:47 40 minutes, 47 seconds and believe in your heart what you have not yet seen with your eyes and believe the goodness 40:53 40 minutes, 53 seconds of God, if you would get it in here… This journey doesn't start with making sense. 41:11 41 minutes, 11 seconds This journey starts with faith. Have faith in God. 41:18 41 minutes, 18 seconds He's with me on this road. "Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter in his glory?" 41:28 41 minutes, 28 seconds You keep wanting to see the glory, but you're only going to see it in the suffering. He is the God of the detour. He is the God of the detail. 41:36 41 minutes, 36 seconds He is the God of your dead end, and he has brought you to this moment today. The Spirit of God is in this place. 41:43 41 minutes, 43 seconds I am preaching out of my mind for somebody who has been on the road. Watch this. 41:51 41 minutes, 51 seconds "Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them…" 41:57 41 minutes, 57 seconds He took it all the way back to show them that the one the prophets had looked forward to was standing right in front of them. 42:10 42 minutes, 10 seconds "He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. " 42:21 42 minutes, 21 seconds He broke it down, on the way, on the road. That's where you learn: on the journey. 42:29 42 minutes, 29 seconds You don't wait until you understand to get started. You grow as you go. You know as you go. Keep walking. 42:37 42 minutes, 37 seconds Keep walking. Keep walking. You'll understand it better by and by. Give him a chance. 42:43 42 minutes, 43 seconds Give him a chance to show you who he is. 42:55 42 minutes, 55 seconds Hold on to his unchanging hand. Trust his heart, even if you can't trace his hand. 43:04 43 minutes, 4 seconds "God, I don't get this, but I'm going forward. " It's a decision. 43:10 43 minutes, 10 seconds Can I give you one more thing? I don't want to cheat you. 43:18 43 minutes, 18 seconds Some people drove a long way to get here. How many of you drove over an hour to be at church today? Over two? Over three? Over four hours? 43:27 43 minutes, 27 seconds Over five? Six? Seven-hour miracle, six-hour energy, whatever. 43:36 43 minutes, 36 seconds Touch seven people and say, "We're going somewhere. " God didn't save us to leave us like he found us. 43:44 43 minutes, 44 seconds God didn't create me to stay stuck in one place, one frame of mind, one way of looking at things. 43:52 43 minutes, 52 seconds Eugene Peterson said, "Every step is an arrival. " Got that? Every step. 43:59 43 minutes, 59 seconds By the time they arrived, they had already arrived. What was revealed on the road was only recognized in reverse. 44:10 44 minutes, 10 seconds What was happening to them as they walked only made sense once they sat down. 44:16 44 minutes, 16 seconds The same one who got up from the grave… Watch what he does next. "They approached the village to which they were going. " 44:22 44 minutes, 22 seconds They got a lot more than they bargained for along the way. They didn't plan for this. They didn't wake up on that morning expecting a miracle. 44:31 44 minutes, 31 seconds They were mourning the loss of what they had thought was the answer, and the answer walked up to them and asked them a brand new question. 44:42 44 minutes, 42 seconds I love it. I'm excited about this series. 44:48 44 minutes, 48 seconds This is just the beginning. We have a lot of ground to cover. 44:57 44 minutes, 57 seconds I want you online every day at 7:00 a. m. , in the car, on the treadmill, under the covers, 45:06 45 minutes, 6 seconds eye boogers, whatever. Join the journey. 45:14 45 minutes, 14 seconds He's there all along in the little things. Just the little things. Look at verse 28 again. 45:23 45 minutes, 23 seconds "They approached the village, and Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. " 45:33 45 minutes, 33 seconds The journey starts where you are, but where it ends depends on you. 45:42 45 minutes, 42 seconds They got there, and Jesus is like, "Thanks for the company. I'll see you later. See you, Cleo. 45:50 45 minutes, 50 seconds Yo, Cleo! I've got to go, Cleo. I've got Peter to see, things to do. " 45:59 45 minutes, 59 seconds Cleo said, "Hold on. " Look at verse 29. "They urged him strongly…" 46:05 46 minutes, 5 seconds Cleo said, "Although we've come to the end of the Emmaus Road, still I can't let go. 46:17 46 minutes, 17 seconds It's unnatural. 46:24 46 minutes, 24 seconds You can't leave me now. You started something. God, you started something in my life. Stay with me till it's over. Stay with me. Hold my hand. 46:32 46 minutes, 32 seconds Walk with me. Talk with me. I need you every hour. 46:39 46 minutes, 39 seconds Stay with me. " "So he went in to stay with them. " 46:47 46 minutes, 47 seconds They sat down. Remember, he's the same God who sent angels to a tomb. He's the God of the dramatic, but he's also the God of the details. 46:57 46 minutes, 57 seconds The Bible says, "While he was at the table with them, he took bread…" He's always taking over. He takes over conversations. 47:06 47 minutes, 6 seconds He takes over suppertime. He's supposed to be a visitor and he becomes a host, and he takes the bread. 47:13 47 minutes, 13 seconds God wants to take your life over today. Don't you see it? You've been doing it on your own. 47:20 47 minutes, 20 seconds You don't have to do it alone anymore. They invite him in. He takes over. 47:27 47 minutes, 27 seconds He takes the bread, breaks the bread, like he was broken, and blesses it. 47:36 47 minutes, 36 seconds "Thank you, Lord. " He says grace and breaks the bread. 47:43 47 minutes, 43 seconds He gave them the bread he had just finished breaking, and the Bible says that when he 47:50 47 minutes, 50 seconds broke the bread to give it to them… 47:53 47 minutes, 53 seconds Verse 31: "Then their eyes were opened…" 48:10 48 minutes, 10 seconds What was revealed in the routine of the breaking of the bread that was not revealed all along the road? 48:16 48 minutes, 16 seconds What did they see at that moment that they had not seen before? 48:22 48 minutes, 22 seconds They saw it in his scars. 48:31 48 minutes, 31 seconds They saw it in what he suffered. Do you see it? 48:39 48 minutes, 39 seconds Sometimes you see him in the broken places more than you see him in the blessed places. 48:45 48 minutes, 45 seconds Sometimes you have to see it in the scars. 48:52 48 minutes, 52 seconds The hands that had held them all along revealed to them when they saw his scars. 48:58 48 minutes, 58 seconds "Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. " 49:04 49 minutes, 4 seconds Open our eyes, Lord. Open our eyes. 49:10 49 minutes, 10 seconds Close your eyes. Quit focusing on what you have to do next. Close your eyes. 49:18 49 minutes, 18 seconds Ask him, "Open my eyes, Lord. " 49:25 49 minutes, 25 seconds Ask him what the disciples asked him. Say, "Stay with me. " Tell him, "Come on in. " 49:33 49 minutes, 33 seconds We're going on a journey. He's with you in this journey. 49:43 49 minutes, 43 seconds Every mile, every detour, every detail, every dead end, every scar, every struggle, he's with you. Sync to video time
