Lighting: The built-in light is too dim for orchids. I measured about 120 PPFD only within about 2 inches of the light (you cannot place orchids so high), while the bottom of the terrarium receives just 30-40 PPFD, which is far below what most orchids need. Their website advertise the possibility of growing Psygmorchis pusilla which needs approx. 300–500 PPFD. When I asked the company if my device is not working properly, they kept pushing the matter I am not setting it properly, yet they do not know the light levels. Customer service seemed a bit aggressive and not wanting to help. This means they are either ignorant for selling a plant growing device without proper specs, or they know the light level is not adequate for most plants yet hiding it.
Mister: The mister is more of a visual effect than a functional feature. Humidity in the enclosure never drops below 88%, so the misting system doesn’t serve much purpose.
Fan: The fan is extremely weak and doesn’t seem to move enough air to help with ventilation.
Humidity control: This is the biggest issue. I cannot get the humidity below 88%, which is excessive even for many orchids. The only access point is through the top, and even leaving the lid off doesn’t help much with drying the air. I suspect the spherical design traps moisture. As a result, mold is already after 1 week starting to grow on the wood, which is concerning.
Watering: According to the American Orchid Society, orchids still need watering even when humidity is high. This system doesn’t really support proper watering without doing it manually, which defeats the purpose of an "automated" terrarium.
Build quality:
Small gaps at the top allow fruit flies to get in and out easily.
The plastic scratches very easily, which is disappointing at this price point.
Reaching into it through the small opening is challenging even for a petite person.
Overall, while the BiOrb looks cool, it doesn’t provide the environmental control needed for growing miniature orchids. It feels more like a decorative display piece than a functional plant terrarium. Now I have to improvise to add all the external features (watering system, extra lights, stronger fan) since I cannot return it. Should have built my own terrarium from scratch like all other hundreds of people.
Hope in the future the company will adapt to current technology. :)
