I like Smart Furniture, but
I like Smart Furniture, but you've really got to read all the fine print on returns and warranties. Phrases like "Free 45 day returns" and "12 year warranty" are prominently displayed. I had a temporary freak out when I was considering returning my Embody chair. The returns page was confusing saying returns of in-stock task chairs were free but there was an 18% restocking fee for orders over $1500. My in-stock chair was over $1500. I emailed Smart Furniture and they calmed me -- the restocking fee doesn't apply to the in-stock chairs. I assume if you customize a chair rather than choosing an in-stock model, you'll pay a return fee if the chair exceeds $1500. It's not clear to me, so I'd recommend contacting SF to confirm the terms before ordering if that kind of thing is important to you.
I also discovered that Herman Miller's fabrics (for the Embody at least) have different warranty periods. The Rhythm and the Sync fabrics have 12 year warranties, but the others are only 5 years. I only found that information on the Herman Miller website. If that info had been displayed on the SF page where I was selecting my chair options, I probably would have chosen the upgraded fabric.
I exchanged email with SF customer service about being unsure if I wanted to keep the Embody I had ordered. I wanted to know if they had an issue with me buying a second chair, knowing I would be returning 1 or both chairs. They had no issue at all with that (some online vendors limit you to one return.). I will be returning one of the chairs and I expect that will go smoothly. I actually returned a chair several years ago. It was no problem for SF! I'm sure the free returns contributes to the outrageous prices of the chairs, but for us folks out in the boonies, it's our only way to get top quality chairs.
