My experience with SolidSurface.com was excellent!
I remodeled my kitchen and wanted to do all the work myself, including the counter tops. I learned of SolidSurface.com after some searching and decided to give it a try. It felt like a bit of a gamble, but turned out to be completely worth it. I will list all of the concerns I had going into the experience and the outcome:
1: How are they going to ship me two 12' long slabs and how am I going to get them into my house? They shipped them on a skid via freight shipping to a local freight hub. The people at the hub were very helpful and loaded the skid onto a truck with no issues. If you get full sheets you will need a full-sized truck and plenty of ratchet straps. When we got to my house, two grown men with good backs (my dad and myself) were able to unload them from the truck. We unloaded one sheet first (on its edge - never flat) and then we unloaded the second sheet along with the skid. The skid doubled as a great work surface when we placed it on two sawhorses. Just be careful to avoid the skid hardware when cutting through the sheet.
2: What if it looks terrible? I ordered LG HI-MACS Carya. There was only a small thumbnail image on their website and they were not able to send samples. Thankfully the sheets looked even better than they did in the image.
3: What if I screw it up while I'm working on it? The website has excellent instructions for working with the material. I read these instructions carefully and followed them. YouTube also has some great videos of people fabricating solid surface counter tops. Make sure you have the proper tools and be patient while making the cuts. The material is also somewhat forgiving. I was able to remove some of my oops moments by sanding them. The material turned out to be easier to work than I thought it would be.
4: What about customer support? Their customer support was outstanding. They responded promptly to all of my questions and their answers were thorough. They certainly seem to stand behind their products.
5: Am I crazy for trying to do my counter tops by myself? Not at all! The kitchen looks great, I saved a boatload of money, and the whole process was actually enjoyable. If you have passable woodworking skills and the right equipment, you can get great results.
Overall, I highly recommend SolidSurface.com!
