My Favourite Thing
In 2012, I moved into the first 1BR apartment I had ever had. To celebrate, I decided to buy the Great Lakes quilt from Haptic. I wanted to hang it on my wall as the main focal point of the place, a beautiful piece of art that felt so meaningful to me. I grew up on Lake Michigan, and my best memories always connect back to that inland sea in one way or another.
When I ordered the quilt, I was able to add a few custom locations. I added my hometown, and I added Bloomington, Indiana, home to my alma mater, Indiana University. I remember commenting something along the lines of, "Bloomington is kinda off the map, but if you can make it work that would be cool!" And sure enough, the artist did it perfectly, with a little down arrow indicating Bloomington was just south of where the 'map' was showing.
Over the years, people would visit me and I would always take them over to see 'my most favourite thing', and I would show them where I was born, where I went to school, where I lived then... I would tell them about Sundays on the Lake, and how much they meant to me. And whenever I was alone in my apartment, I would often walk over and just have a little look myself, and remind myself of all the same.
Now, I live in Ireland. When I moved here in 2021, I had to say goodbye to about 80% of everything I owned. I packed three giant suitcases, and moved to a new country— and within that very very minimal space was my Great Lakes quilt. I couldn't imagine not having it with me. And now, the quilt serves again as a storyteller for a whole new group of people. Friends visit, and I proudly tell them the same stories, reminding them that yes, the Lakes are as big as seas.
And for the days I miss the place from where I come, thousands of miles away, my quilt now lives on my bed. A constant reminder of the place and people that raised me.
If you're thinking of buying from Haptic Lab, I encourage you to do so. Their pieces are incredible, and they will be with you for life. Thanks, Haptic, for creating something so special.
