Solid white for basement
I purchased 2 each of 3 gallon solid white epoxy kit for my existing house basement built in 1940th. Area applied was 420sf.
Delivery to seattle wa took about one week with standard shipment.
Prep work: used 6” angle grinder with 80 grid diamond wheel cup. Patched the holes with bondo.
Vacuumed floor.
Kept the room warm to 70 degree throughout the project.
Followed instruction available on the company website and got additional tip from online chat.
I purchased squirrel mixer to mix 4 gallon of white in 5 gallon bucket for 2-1/2 minutes.
Mixed white and epoxy resin in 2:1 ration. I used cordless drill in low speed setting, but it Ended up bubbly during the mixing process. For each mix, I ended up making 1 gallon and mixed for 2-1/2 minutes.
I had large dip bucket and 18” roller, 6” small roller and brush.
Primer:
Applied really thin.
I was able to see thru the gray concrete, but I was assuming the finish coat will cover everything and make it solid white just like painting the wall.
I Used 2 gallons for 420sf. The instruction says the finish coat coverage after prime coat is 350sf/gal with dip and roll. (So remaining 4 gallon was supposed to be enough, but, I should’ve gotten more. With dip and roll, you will need to apply more than 2 coat after priming. It won’t provide consistent solid white with prime and 1 coat. )
Next day, it was dry and I was able to walk. I got a lot of pin hole and fish eyes. Before the finish coat, sanded down the pinholes and vacuumed.
Finish coat.
I intentionally applied thick, but it didn’t stay solid white when I rolled.
Because of that, I ended up pouring and rolling.
It provided more solid white than rolling, but the mix was very thick so I might get squeezy next time to spread out more even.
I waited 24hrs. The surface felt solid, but it was still rubbery. When I walked on it, it leaves foot mark, but it eventually went away.
I cranked up the heat and waited one more day and it didn’t leave finger print as much so I started walking and removed the masking.
It wasn’t rock solid yet so I was able to remove making easy.
I think by the 3rd day, it was rock solid.
I removed leftover epoxy in mixing gallon pale. Day 1, it was flexible like rubber, but by the 3rd day, i was not able to flex it.
I like how hard it became, but I wish the instruction recommends more than 2 finish coat with dip and roll.
I will order another 6 gallon to make it solid white. I should’ve purchased 15 gallon kit.
I think it is good product.
