Five stars — their biltong
Five stars — their biltong and their service absolutely deserve it!
I have a long story with them.
I love eating jerky, so normally I just grab random bags from Coles or Woolies. But I never really enjoy the coating flavours, it always feels like I’m eating dipping sauce instead of actual beef. So I only buy jerky when I really crave it, and then regret it because it’s basically like drinking a cup of sauce again.
One day at work, I was chatting with a colleague about lunch, and somehow we ended up talking about jerky. He told me he loves something similar called biltong. He said the ingredients are clean and natural, though some pieces can be harder to chew. He even gave me a tiny piece of his sea salt flavour to try. That was my first time tasting biltong. My first reaction was “sour?”, but then I could taste the real beef, clean, natural beef flavour. I was too shy to take a big piece, so I only took a tiny bite, which probably made him think I wasn’t interested.
A few days later, I kept thinking about it and decided to check their website. I saw the mixed flavours box. It’s not cheap to buy a whole box, but with the 10% new customer discount, I thought I might as well order more than just a small tasting bag. As long as it’s natural and healthy, how bad could it be?
Then I saw the kangaroo meat bites — cheaper and healthy, but I’d never tried kangaroo before. Some reviews said it tasted awful, so I hesitated for a few days. In the end, I decided to take the risk and ordered a whole box of kangaroo plus a whole box of mixed biltong. Even with the discount, it was still a lot of money, but I love natural flavours, and I’ve eaten wallaby before, so I thought, “How bad could kangaroo be?”
When the order arrived, the biltong was amazing.
Seriously, they taste so good. Clean ingredients, real beef flavour, no sauce covering everything , exactly what I want. There are some small cons: a few pieces have tough tendon bits, and different bags have slightly different dryness levels. The chilli and classic flavours were a bit drier than the sea salt, and one classic bag had quite a lot of fat pieces (maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the bag). But honestly, I’m being very strict here. These things happen with handmade products and random packaging. Overall, all three flavours taste awesome.
If you like natural flavour and want to taste the beef itself, this is the best product I’ve found. If you prefer sweet or heavily coated jerky, this might not be for you. But for me, I can’t stop eating them. I have to control myself every day. Chilli is tasty-hot but not burning, sea salt is slightly moist with a perfect salty-sour balance, and classic has a gentle herb taste. They’re all amazing.
Now… the kangaroo.
When I opened the first bag, the smell was a bit strong, kind of sour and bloody? Hard to describe. The taste was better than the smell, but still difficult for me. I tried removing the skin (I don’t like skins on anything, even sausages), and it helped a little, but the flavour still felt like… biting your tongue and tasting blood. Maybe because of the high iron content? I’m not sure. The chilli kangaroo was a bit easier, but still not something I could enjoy. I could eat one bite a day, but I had 12 bags, 1. 2kg, and I had no idea how to finish them.
So I decided to email them. I didn’t expect anything. It wasn’t their fault, it was just my personal taste. I was ready for a “no” or no reply at all. I even prepared myself to force one bite a day so I wouldn’t waste food.
But to my surprise, they replied the next day. And even more surprisingly, they offered me a free return label for the remaining 11 bags and asked whether I wanted a full refund for the kangaroo or a swap for another biltong box. I couldn’t believe it. The product wasn’t faulty, I just didn’t like the flavour, yet they still cared about my experience. I returned the kangaroo and got another mixed biltong box. They didn’t even charge me the price difference. They simply said they wanted my experience to be positive.
So yes, this is a long story. But if you read this far: I truly recommend them. And I really want to emphasise this: I genuinely, seriously love their biltong. Not the “oh yeah it’s pretty good” kind of love, i mean the kind where after the first bag, I already knew I would buy it again. It’s exactly the flavour I’ve been searching for all this time: clean, natural, no heavy sauces covering everything, just the real taste of beef. Every time I open a bag, I have to remind myself to slow down because it’s so easy to keep eating without stopping. That “the more you chew, the better it tastes” feeling is something I never got from supermarket jerky. Honestly, it has become one of the snacks I look forward to the most. Just thinking about it makes me crave it. Their products are excellent, healthy, and full of natural flavour. I sincerely love their biltong.
Three small suggestions for the company:
Please consider selling single small bags of kangaroo (like 100g) instead of only the full 1. 2kg box. It would make it easier for people to try without committing to so much.
Maybe try a chilli or herb-seasoned kangaroo version. The plain natural flavour is a bit strong for me, but with seasoning, I would love to try again. If you ever release it, please contact me, I’d happily buy it.
It would be great to have another way to get the 10% discount besides a subscription. I travel a lot, so I can’t subscribe regularly. Maybe orders over a certain amount could qualify? But I understand subscription helps with planning, so this is just a thought. Even without the discount, I’ll still support your products because they truly deserve it.
Conclusion:
Thank you for the great products. I love your biltong. Wishing your team all the best, you deserve all the love and support!
