The first time I tried
The first time I tried Kwak was in The Netherlands last year. Faced with a daunting list of Belgian and Dutch beers I stuck to names familiar to me in the UK to start with but then took the plunge and effectively stuck a pin in the list and happened upon Kwak. The first thing of course you notice is the glass, I'm still not sure if you're supposed to hold the handle of the stand while you drink it or take the glass out of it and hold it by the stem. Still, once tried it has rapidly become my favourite: full bodied but not cloyingly so, almost a barley wine. The toffee flavour comes through and there is a hint of fruit so 'caramalised banana' is a good description. Satisfyingly strong as well. Chilled, it has become my tipple of choice on a warm summer's evening when I would normally drink a lighter beer and at room temperature in the winter it is heart warming. I'd give 6 stars if i could.
