Flex+ review
The Flex+ is really a cool and versatile fermenter. The fact that it can pressure transfer, serve as a bright tank, and force carbonate are wonderful bonuses. The polished stainless is a visual wonder and all welds are seamless and well done. Used for one batch so far and it worked great. Only issue is that it wasn’t holding pressure that well. I was a bit disappointed but it certainly wasn’t a deal-breaker. But then I discovered that I hadn’t really read the directions that closely and had installed the lid pressure gasket upside down. After correcting this and running some pressure tests, it held pressure remarkably well. However, you will really need to tighten the lid clamp and all other TC clamps really well. The thermowell attachment is essential for temperature control and the butterfly valve is smooth and a nice professional touch. I also purchased the sampling valve (works great but remember to add a bit of pressure to induce a proper flow), the pressure manifold kit, clear top, and pressure transfer kit.
Things to note:
1. It’s heavier than a carboy and should not be lifted by the handles when full. I use my kegerator for temp control which is not where I brew.** So I repurposed the carboy carrying strap from my 6 gallon Big Mouth Bubbler to carry this unit. Again, it’s heavy when full! Again, not everyone will have this issue either.
2. Again, no yeast/grub dump. Conical bottom really helps but a dump mechanism would make this beyond perfect.
3. Number of accessories immediately available is great and you can really customize this to your needs.
4. Once you’re all in on the unit and the cost of accessories, it gets a bit pricey. But still beats most other conical cost-points out there by a wide margin. The price, quality, small footprint, and accessories make this a worthy consideration for a serious homebrewing upgrade.
**The entire Flex+ with butterfly valve, pressure manifold kit, and sampling valve attached EASILY fits in my Kenmore kegerator.
