I researched these for a long time. I combed Gearslutz on any experiences, read reviews, etc. I received a brand new modded pair 2 weeks ago. First thing you notice is, if you’d never gotten an un-modded pair brand new the only distinction is a small sticker on the back from ZenPro stating these are modded. The packaging, presentation is the same. You can’t even tell they pulled them out of the box to do it. Now to the important part - The sound: I’ve had a standard set of HS8’s for 2 years in my treated room. I know exactly what they sound like, their limitations, etc. i know I’m good for about 3-4 hours average mixing/listening before the top end destroys me for the day. You don’t know what they are capable of until the mod... Right away, not even broken in - the top opened and the sides spread out. Front to back dimension puts you inside, and after a week of burning in the bottom is extended. The top is effortless. It’s all the attributes you hear when someone upgrades to a high end DAC and I’m just using a silver face Apollo twin. My next purchase will be a Crane Song Solaris and I can’t imagine I will need anything for quite a while. You seriously have no idea how crippled these things are coming straight from Yamaha until this mod is done. It’s extremely night and day and I can’t believe you don’t hear more about this.. The only place to go from here is a high-end 3 way monitor.. (looking at you ATC). If you’re like me and you want to work in an unconfined sound stage without the second mortgage, the ZenPro modded HS8 is where you start, period. And the Coffee’s pretty great! Thanks Warren!
