When they work, they are great. Good sound, and comfortable to wear. I wear them in the gym and the ear phones stay in perfectly well. On the downside the left ear phone just randomly drops connection...generally only for a few seconds but that makes it no less annoying. The proximity between the ear phone and the device has no bearing. I like these ear phones but not as much as I want to.

Touch controls aren't the most responsive either, but a great pair for the flat $99 they are
