The Geekcom Mini Air 11
The Geekcom Mini Air 11 computer offers a lot of potential for a small price. The minimum configuration for their N5095 CPU comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD drive and Windows 11 Pro pre-installed. It also gives you three USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, one HDMI port, and one Mini Display Port; as well as Wi-fi 5, Bluetooth v4.2, 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet.
Geekcom states that the RAM can be upgraded to 32GB. But the Intel website for the N5095 states that the maximum RAM memory supported is 16GB. So unless Intel is wrong (which doesn't seem likely), if you add the full 32GB RAM, only 16GB can be accessed by the CPU. Best to add just another 8GB DDR4 DRAM 3200mHz and bump it up to 16GB – which is more than what most people will need. This is what I did. You can get an 8GB DRAM board at BestBuy for about $20.
Geekcom also states that the stock 256GB SSD drive can be upgraded to a 1TB drive. However, this is a problem because the Mini Air 11 only has one M.2 SSD slot.
So when you want to upgrade your SSD drive from the 256GB to 1TB – and reinstall Windows 11 Pro, you will find that it is impossible to get information that shows you how to do this. Neither Geekcom or any other source on the internet provide any guidance. GOOD NEWS: The information in this review describes how to do it.
This short review tells you how to upgrade your Mini Air 11 computer to increase the memory and install a 1TB SSD drive. It identifies the things you need and where to get them.
A. THINGS TO CONSIDER GETTING
BTW: here are some of the additional things that you will find useful when working with your Mini Air 11.
* Mini display to VGA connector. Lets you connect a standard VGA monitor (something you probably already have) to the Mini Air 11 Mini Display Port. Available on eBay for about $6.
* 6 foot male to female VGA cable. Makes it easy to 'switch' the monitor between an existing computer box and the Mini Air 11 Mini display to VGA connector. Available on eBay for about $6.
* Wireless keyboard and mouse. The 'tranceiver' gets plugged into the rear USB 3.2 port of the Mini Air. Available at BestBuy for the keyboard, mouse and transceiver as a set for about $22.
* Slim External CD DVD Drive USB 3.0 Disc Player Burner Writer For Laptop PC Mac. Available on eBay for about $22.
* M.2 SSD enclosure. Lets you use that original 256GB SSD as a high capacity USB "jump drive." It lets you backup all your data on a dedicated resource. Available on eBay for about $12.
* Dollar Tree (dollartree.com) has a Tool Bench Hardware 8-In-1 Screwdriver Set, 8-pc. Set (SKU: 288290) for $1.25. One of the "philips" bits is the exact size that fits the four screws that attach the bottom plate to the Mini Air 11. It will help you avoid "stripping" the screws with a different size philips screwdriver bit.
B. THINGS YOU NEED
You need to first get the following items to upgrade your Mini Air 11.
Wireless keyboard and mouse (if needed). Get at BestBuy for $22. Full-size Wireless Membrane Keyboard and Mouse Bundle with USB Receiver Model:BE-PKRFCO SKU:6434809. I plugged the receiver into the back lower USB slot.
8GB DDR4 DRAM 3200mHz. Get at BestBuy for $20. PNY - Performance 8GB DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz CL22 SODIMM Notebook/Laptop Memory Model:MN8GSD43200-TB SKU:6511519
32GB 3.2 USB flash drive. Get at BestBuy for $7. PNY - Elite Turbo Attache 4 32GB USB 3.2 Flash Drive - Gray SKU:1498843
PNY CS2140 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.4 3D NAND Internal Solid State. Get on eBay for about $50.
C. UPGRADING THE RAM
Because the N5095 CPU (according to Intel) only supports 16GB memory, it's best to consider adding just one additional 8GB board and bump it up to 16GB – which is more than what most people will need. This is what I did. To proceed, you need a 8GB DDR4 DRAM 3200mHz board. Available at BestBuy for $20. (see B. THINGS YOU NEED)
Note: BEFORE you upgrade the RAM, you need to Ground yourself to drain off any static electricity in your body.
Loosen the screws from the bottom of the Mini Air 11, then remove the bottom plate.
Take the 8GB board and install it into the extra slot of your computer. Confirm that it is "latched" in place.
Reattach the bottom plate. Do not tighten the screws. Just lightly "snug" is adequate.
Reattach the power, monitor and other cables and power up the Mini Air. Confirm that it "sees" the added memory.
D. CREATING A RECOVERY DRIVE
To proceed, you need a 32GB 3.2 USB flash drive for this. Available at BestBuy for $7. (see B. THINGS YOU NEED)
To upgrade your Geekcom Mini Air 11 to a 1TB SSD drive, you need to create a recovery drive. You do this while your stock SSD drive is still in your computer. It lets you put Windows 11 Pro onto the Recovery Drive.
Here is what to do.
1. Power on your Mini Air 11.
2. Insert the empty 32GB 3.2USB flash drive into the the front USB 3.2 Gen 2 Port of your Mini Air to create the Recovery Media.
3. Search for "Create a recovery drive" and launch the result. (it's in the Control Panel)
4. Make sure that "[x] Backup Systems Files" remains checked.
Note: this will take time (my effort took me 1 hour and 20 minutes.) Your result may vary.
5. When done, safely eject and remove the USB drive (this is your Recovery Media drive).
6. Shut down windows and power down the computer. Disconnect and remove all cables from the Mini Air 11.
E. INSTALLING THE 1GB SSD DRIVE
To proceed, you need a PNY CS2140 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.4 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (or equivalent). Available on eBay for about $50.
FYI: Wait until After the 1TB drive is installed to add your applications and data.
Note: BEFORE you upgrade the SSD, you need to Ground yourself to drain off any static electricity in your body.
Remove the screws from the bottom of the Mini Air 11, then remove the bottom plate.
Remove the 256GB SSD Drive and store it in a container that protects it from static electricity.
Insert the 1TB SSD Drive into the Mini Air empty slot. Confirm that it is "latched" in place.
Reattach the bottom plate. Do not tighten the screws. Just lightly "snug" is adequate.
Reattach the power, monitor and other cables.
F. RELOADING WINDOWS 11 PRO
Use the following steps to reload Windows 11 Pro onto your 1TB SSD Drive.
1. Insert the Recovery Drive (the USB drive you created in "D. CREATING A RECOVERY DRIVE".
2. Press the power button of the Mini Air and IMMEDIATELY and repeatedly press the F7 key until you see the "Please Select Boot Device" dialog box.
3. Use the down arrow key to select the "UEFI: PNY USB FD PMAP, Partition 1" choice and press Enter.
4. Choose keyboard layout (U.S.)
5. Choose Recover Option, then fully clean the drive.
It will take about an hour for the process to complete. Afterwards, shut down the computer. Pull out the USB Recovery Drive. Then start the computer again and follow the Microsoft login steps.
Confirm that Windows reports the 1TB drive.
Now you can start loading your applications and enjoy your new "toy".
