old and trying to slim down
My journey with Saddle Back Leather began years ago. I just moved to Houston, Texas and landed a job as a senior project manager with a large general contractor building a 33-story building in mid town. After several months on the project I was sick and tired of the $20 nylon briefcase/backpack I was using. After searching for some time, I found my "thing" it was a large Saddle Back Leather briefcase. I splurged and bought it for myself. It was a tobacco brown color that made my office smell like I should have wing back chairs, cigars and whiskey flowing. Fast forward a year and it appears that some jack wagon thought he needed that briefcase more than me and broke into my truck and stole it while I was having lunch with a client.
My wife was really depressed for me after seeing me pull the old $20-dollar nylon briefcase/backpack out of the garage and start using it again. Six months later, she bought me the same Saddle Back Leather briefcase in black for my birthday. I fell in love with her all over again. Oh, yay and I really thanked my wife as well, she is and always will be the bomb. Although, the new brief was great it did not have the full-on leather smell of the original briefcase in tobacco. I used that briefcase for over 12 years. It goes with me everywhere even to my ranch while hunting. I loved it but still missed the tobacco brown.
I am now a little over 50 years old and carrying the large briefcase filled with all of the "Essential Everyday Carry" (I had more crap in my briefcase than anyone could ever imagine) was taking its toll on me. It is a heavy bag and filled even heavier. I am getting older and trying to slim down and stay in shape. So, I thought I would start with the easy part. Clean out the briefcase. I dumped all of the really non-essential crap from my briefcase and realized that it was looking like I will after I loose 30 pounds, saggy and broken in. Not in a bad way for sure just a little like an old working man you see in those glossy black and white photos. You know a little rough around the edges, wrinkles all over his face, dirty hands, but freaking solid as a rock and will last another 50 years.
This made me start to think, after I lose my weight, I am not going to be wearing my old clothes, so I thought maybe a new brief case was in order. My idea was slim so I figured if I could not find what I was looking for then I would call Dave and demand, wait - try to persuade, ok beg him to make what I was looking for. But low and behold he had two different briefs that I thought would work. I carry a 15” Macbook Pro and measured it three times to make sure it and everything else I needed would fit.
Enter the Saddle Back Leather “Slim Leather Briefcase”. I bought it, waiting patiently for FedEx to arrive. The box arrived at my office while I was out. My Admin called me to tell me I got a package and said that the package smelled so good she was going to keep it in her office until I got back.
I waited to open it until of my employees left. I cleaned off my desk, poured myself a small glass of Crown XR, took a sip and pulled out my knife. Once the box was cut open my whole office filled with the familiar scent of an old leather shop, the rich smell was immersive. Slowly I unwrapped the paper and it was like the sun shone through the ceiling of my office highlighting only the new bag. It was just what I was looking for! The clean lines of the un-scuffed leather, the stiffness of the bag, and for sure the tobacco color was perfect. I set out, cleared my old bag of all of my essentials and slowly found new homes for everything. I will add that I also purchased a Cord Wrap Set and Leather Organizer Bag from Saddle Back Leather. Everything fits perfect. What I carry every day is maybe more than some but it is what I need –
A Leatherman Wave;
A Cree Flashlight;
A MacBook Pro 15”;
An iPad Pro 12.9 inch;
A half size mole skin note pad;
A magic mouse;
A 1200 ah backup power supply;
A power supply for the MacBook;
A power supply for the iPad;
Several USB C cables;
A HyperDrive DUO USB Type-C Hub;
Miscellaneous files and work stuff that I bring home; and
A Sig Sauer P225 in a Cross Breed Holster with an extra magazine.
Everything fits with room to spare, not much mind you but enough should I need to insert other things.
My answer to the "Should I buy one" question is why buy a second tier knock off to save a few bucks or even spend the same money or more on a high quality knock off when you can get the original Saddle Back Leather.
Reward the company that started small, scratched their way up, and built a product that will last instead of the company that knocked off the bag that Dave built. Remember their company gives back to its community, created jobs for hard working people and gives back to God. And to top all of that off, you will get Dave’s emails every so often full of wit and whimsey and sarcasm and surliness. They are great!
That was really long winded, but as you can tell I love this bag, actually I love all of their stuff. Yes, it is relatively expensive but keep in mind that I still have and have been using my second bag for a little over 12 years and I could have used it for 50 more. If you purchase any product from Saddle Back Leather, you will not be disappointed. The story behind them, the ownership that they take, their customer service, their everything is top notch!
My suggestion is to find the bag you want, save your money if you need to, and then pull the trigger on what you want. You will be happy.
