Good afternoon Mrs. Galan, I
Good afternoon Mrs. Galan,
I am sure you are aware of the district wide and Canyon High School cell phone policy. In my class, students have been instructed to place their phone in the phone pocket, and to have headphones put away. Today, Yance did not put his headphones away and he was using them during class. This is his second warning . If there is a another warning, his phone/headphones will be sent to the Student Responsibility Center for the day.
Thank you. (Cell Phone Policy is below. )
-Ms. Hargrave
Dear Canyon High School Families,
SUBJECT: New High School Cell Phone Policy - (including the use of earbuds/air pods/watches). I hope this message finds you well as we wind down from summer break and prepare for the start of a new school year. I am writing to inform you of an important new policy regarding cell phone use at Canyon High School and to seek your support in its successful implementation. Canyon High School, with support of the William S. High School District, will pilot the new High School Cell Phone Policy for the upcoming school year. Many of you may be aware that all of the Jr. High School’s in our district have a similar policy already in place. We understand there will be concerns and issues as we begin the implementation process. We want to work with our families and community members to ensure the best possible learning environment for our students. We will be providing surveys and request for feedback from all stakeholders as we work through the piloting process.
We understand that cell phones play an integral role in our daily lives, but we believe this policy is crucial in maintaining an environment conducive to learning and personal growth for all our students. This decision comes after careful consideration of how cell phone use during instructional time can negatively impact students' focus, learning, and overall school environment. Your support is essential in helping your child understand the importance of adhering to this policy and the consequences of non-compliance.
We will begin the implementation of this policy on August 12, 2024. Canyon High School students may use their phones on campus before 8:30AM, after 2:45PM. and during nutrition and lunch breaks only. These breaks are from 10:15 AM to 10:35 AM and 12:20 PM to 1:00 PM, respectively. See Late Start Schedule for adjusted break times. Students will not use their cell during instructional time. Canyon High School students will keep their phones off or on silent and away, in a bag, or cell phone pocket, locker, or with their teacher, during instructional time. Phones may not be on a student’s person during instructional time.
● Canyon High School students will not use their phones in campus restrooms. All phones will be left in the classroom if a student uses the restroom during instructional time.
● Canyon High School students who arrive to school after the start of the period, will turn their phones off or on silent and put them away before entering campus.
● Canyon High School students will not use their cell phone camera, video or voice recording function in a way or under any circumstances which infringe the privacy rights of other students or staff. This includes but is not limited to the video taking of fights, peer conflicts, school personnel, and medical emergencies.
● The Hart District and Canyon High School assume no liability for the damage, loss of misuse of the cell phone by the student or another person.
● Students are expected to immediately comply with the direction of any school personnel to cease the use of a cell phone on campus or at a school-sponsored activity.
● Failure to comply with this policy may result in the confiscation of cell phones by school personnel
To ensure the policy's success, we kindly ask that parents/guardians refrain from contacting your child during school hours, except during the specified break times. If an urgent situation arises, please contact the school office, and we will ensure that your child receives the message promptly. Common Sense Rule- if a student is in crisis they may ask the teacher for permission to use their phone. In the event of an emergency students will have access to their phones as
soon as the environment has been deemed safe.
Students found using their phones during instructional periods will face consequences which may include, but are not limited to: Canyon High School Cell Phone Misuse Progressive Discipline
Please note these consequences have not changed from our previous district policy. If a student does not comply with the cell phone (including the use of earbuds/air pods/watch) policy, the Canyon staff will respond in the following manner:
First offense: Teacher warning and parent/guardian contact.
Second offense: The cell phone will be brought to the Student Responsibility Center (SRC) at the teacher's earliest convenience. The student will come to the SRC at the end of their school day for a conference with the administrator of the day. Parent/guardian will be informed.
Third offense: The cell phone will be brought to the SRC at the teacher's earliest convenience. The cell phone will be returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the school day.
Fourth offense: The cell phone will be brought to the SRC at the teacher's earliest convenience. The cell phone will be returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the school day, and will no longer be permitted on campus.
We appreciate your cooperation and support in this matter. Together, we can ensure that Canyon High School remains a place where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your understanding and support! We look forward to working with you on supporting a comprehensive learning environment for all students.
