My favorite pencils!

I was unhappy with the quality of pencils I found in drugstores and places like Staples and Office Depot. The Wirecutter column of the NY Times recommended several. Of the top three, two came from Pencils. com. I ordered a dozen of each of the top three, and am still trying to decide which I like best. They’re all good. The two from Pencils. com were the Golden Bear and the Forest Choice. Much better than what I have had.

I ordered 200 custom pencils in a rich royal purple, and Pencils. com shipped them in five days through a snowstorm which in the prestige world I teach about would be considered almost indecently efficient. There was no tissue paper, no handwritten note from a founder who discovered her passion for cedarwood while forest-bathing in the Pacific Northwest. The pencils simply were. This is either a company catastrophe or the most radical act of confidence I've ever witnessed from a dot-com. The lacquer was GORGEOUS and rich a saturated, deliberate purple that made each pencil look like it had somewhere important to be. The gold debossing was excellent: clean, precise and easy to read. I bought these for a college seminar I teach on luxury brands. . . Pencils. com gave me exactly what I asked for, exactly when I needed it, with zero mythology attached, if you think about it, is its own kind of radical luxury. Five stars, no notes.
