Outstanding, almost perfect, solar-powered, completely wireless tracking security camera
I have lots of solar-powered security cameras around our house. This one from Eufy is, by far, the best. This is a completely wireless camera, connecting via WiFi and powered by a solar panel. The camera auto-tracks the subject across a great range of motion (360° of pan and 70° of tilt), and does so very well. It has two lenses, a standard view, and a 3X zoom. This is an optical zoom, not a digital zoom, so the image quality is not compromised.Set up was easy, and the supplied instructions are good. One thing to note: there is a sync button on the back of the camera that makes pairing and setting up a breeze, IF you read the instructions fully, I didn't, and thought the rubber thing on the back was a weather cover, and tried my darndest to pry it open. It's not a weather cover - it's a rubber covered push button. Luckily for me, I realized this before ruining the camera. The audio quality is remarkably good, also. Very clear with good volume. The best I've experiencedIf you use the camera with the Eufy Homebase (Not included, and I don't have one), you can even teach it to recognize people and vehicles. The Homebase also greatly expands the internal 8Gb storage capacity. More on this later.I have our S340 mounted on a corner of our house, to a gutter downspout. See photos. The mount did not come with the camera, but it worked out perfect. This is a good place to place the camera. It gives a full view of the driveway, or entire front yard and the walkway to our front door. The solar panel (supplied) can mount atop the camera with a provided click mount, but as this camera in on the northwest corner of our house, it gets very little sunlight, so I chose the option of mounting the solar panel remotely, on the south-facing back of our house. One thing i had to purchase were two 4m long extension power cables to connect the camera to the solar panel. These have to be made for this purpose, and Eufy didn't seem to sell any, so I purchased a couple from Reolink (I have other Reolink cameras and have used these cables before), and they work great. I had to kludge a weather mount for where the Reolink cable plugs into the back of the Eufy camera, see photo. The battery charges quickly, and keeps a charge for a number of cloudy days. I did find, though, that I had to disable the camera after a 5 day period of constant clouds, as the battery was down to 20%.The app is VERY full featured, and describing it in total is beyond the scope of this review. I will, however, mention some highlights and some challenges. You can select to record and view one or both of the lenses. I like the simultaneous wide and zoom look, although be advised, this view uses up the batteries quicker.Image quality is some of the best I've seen in a consumer camera. The daytime images are clear, and well exposed, and the nighttime videos, both the IR and the color, and very good. Tracking is quick (speed is adjustable in the app) and accurate, although if something is moving fast, the 3X zoom view can lag just a little. The tracking can also be confused by two cars heading different directions, but honestly, no AI is going to be able to figure out which object to track in this situation,.You can set sleep times, which is standard at this price range. An audible beep can be enabled, as can a spotlight for full color night recording. The spotlight is bright, improves image quality, and very noticeable, serving as a warning. Here are some of the things I don't like. You have the option of setting up a tracking zone, where only items inside this zone are recorded, and this if good, HOWEVER, and this is one of my major quibbles, you cannot toggle this on and off. For example, say you only want to use the tracking zone during the day, to record deliveries and people or vehicles close to your home, but at night, want it disabled, to give you a wider detection zone. Not only can this not be accomplished automatically on a schedule within the app, you can't even do it manually. You have to DELETE the tracking zone entirely to disable it, and REDRAW it in the morning when you want to use it again. EVERY TIME. This is just dumb, and completely different than every other security camera I have. You can set up 4 standard views, and manually cycle between them in the app, choosing one as the default. Again, HOWEVER, you can't have the camera automatically cycle from one view to the next automatically, which is something other companies let you do. I know this sucks battery power very quickly, but if I want to have my camera cycle from one view to the next, and view it, say, on my computer, I should be able to do this.Oh, and speaking of viewing it on a computer, there is no desktop app. You can view the camera on a web browser, but every time you do this, you have to go into the app and get a security code...EVERY TIME. No desktop app? There is no provision for expanding storage beyond the internal 8GB. That's right, no way to add your own SD card. I suppose this is Eufy's way of forcing you to buy the Homebase, but it kinda makes me mad. To be fair, though, the 8Gb has been enough to easily record weeks of video, and the camera will start recording over the 8Gb if you exceed this amount, starting with the oldest recordings, but COME ON, Eufy, seriously? No ability to add our own SD card?It is also 24.GHz only. Would be nice if it allowed 5Ghz also, like some other manufacturers do.So, in summary, what's my opinion? Despite all the issues I have listed above, this is the best camera we have, out of more than a dozen. It does almost everything I'd want it to do. It is so flexible, and works so well that I have been able to relocate two other cameras to other places in our yard, as the Eufy covers areas these other cameras used to cover.I'm a demanding consumer, and am surprised Eufy (Anker) hasn't taken care of at least some of the items I've called out above. Their customer service is easy to reach, and I've informed them of these items.I can strongly recommend the SoloCam S340 to anyone looking for a two-lens, auto-tracking solar-powered security camera for their home or business. It is ALMOST perfect…almost.
