Trusting My Gut for Her Gut
I’ve officially started the transition process for my German Shepherd, who was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) as a puppy. She’s been on Royal Canin’s Hydrolyzed Protein diet since she was 11 months old — she’s now 4. 5 years old.
While it’s been effective for managing her stomach issues, I’ve never been fully satisfied with it. Her coat has become dull and dry, and she sheds excessively. On top of that, the cost has gotten a bit out of hand — $145 for a 25lb bag! She’s a big girl (85–90lbs), so we go through it pretty quickly.
Over time, I’ve noticed she’s become more tolerant of small amounts of animal protein, so I’ve been incorporating limited portions of Open Farm products as toppers alongside her prescription food. Recently, I came across Open Farm’s Kind Earth plant-based recipe and decided to give it a try.
Like her prescription diet, Kind Earth is free of animal products — but what stood out to me is how intentional Open Farm is with ingredient sourcing and formulation. They’ve created a complete, balanced diet using a much shorter and more transparent ingredient list. Best of all, it contains no corn, wheat, or soy — the three main ingredients in her current prescription food.
It’s also a much more affordable option, so I’m cautiously optimistic. Right now, we’re at a 50/50 mix of the two foods. She’s been finishing her bowl and (knock on wood) no digestive issues so far! She seems happy — and that’s what matters most. Fingers crossed this continues to be a good fit for her.
